UK Projects Team
The UK Projects team deal with install-led and specialist projects that focus on offering products and solutions in a variety of exciting and fast-moving sectors in the event’s world.
In recent months, the team has worked on projects that include Brighton College, Aviva Studios (Factory International), Selfridges, Cadbury’s World, Liverpool Empire, Oxford, Co-Op Arena and many more, in multiple sectors, including education, festivals and arenas.
J&C Joel is looking to expand its Projects Department through the recruitment of an experienced Design Engineer. The role of a Design Engineer is a key technical role within the department with responsibility for design and coordination of stage engineering and drapery for installation into a variety of venues around the world, from school auditoriums to world class arenas.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
The role will comprise of the following:
* Produce detailed GA and Shop Drawings to facilitate the installation of standard and bespoke stage machinery, within performing art spaces.
* Work closely with engineers, architects, and other specifiers to understand design requirements, clarify technical details, and ensure the feasibility of designs.
* Responsibility for overall coordination of design information from the J&C Joel team to other contactors, with appropriate follow-up to ensure approvals are obtained according to program.
* Ability to design parts and generate manufacture drawings for the following processes: sheet metal manufacture, fabrication, laser cutting, welding, machining, milling, turning.
* Consistently designing with safety in mind for both the end user and our installation team, within the context of industry BS standards and best practices.
* Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, including bills of materials, assembly instructions, and engineering specifications.
* Experience of online portals (A-Site, BIM360, Aconnex, etc) to manage technical submissions and approvals is a plus.
* Contribute to the product development process by identifying opportunities for design improvements, cost reductions, or performance enhancements.
* Perform quality checks on design drawings and documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to standards.
* Working with project managers and installation teams to deal with engineering matter arising on site.
* Supporting the wider design team with worldwide projects.
Skills and Experience
This position requires a motivated, forward-thinking individual with an eye for detail and commercial business sense. The ability to work to deadlines and manage several projects simultaneously, thinking through the best design options to achieve the optimum safety and quality within a project’s constraints is essential.
The successful candidate will have the following:
* 3+ years of experience working within engineering or the construction industry.
* A diploma or bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field would be an advantage but is not required.
* Strong experience with SolidWorks (3+ years) or similar 3D packages
* Strong experience with AutoCAD (3+ years)
* Keen attention to detail, with precision and accuracy in engineering drawings.
* Problem solving ability to resolve design issues and propose solutions.
* Ability to represent J&C Joel professionally in meetings with outside stakeholders and other contractors for design reviews.
* A strong team mentality, able to take ownership of your own tasks and workload.
* Capability to work with colleagues who are remote and in different time zones.
* Ability to contribute to ongoing improvements within the department and the company.
* Understanding of construction drawing practices & standard, and experience within the construction industry is desirable.
* The primary focus of this role is mechanical; however, a knowledge of electrical systems/control automation would be an advantage.
* Experience with Revit would be considered a plus, but not essential.

Hours
08:30 – 17:00 Monday to Thursday, 09:00 – 15:00 Friday.
