Join us today to become a Conservator Volunteer and be part of the team keeping history alive by preserving our waterways. In this role, you’ll experience the many faces and locations of our beautiful network and help maintain our structures and assets. Whether it’s working on pre-planned maintenance, such as cutting back vegetation around aqueducts, or tackling graffiti in urban locations, our Conservators ensure there’s plenty of beauty on the doorstep. This is a great opportunity to make a significant difference in your community while learning more about the canals in your area.
We have a small workshop at Newbury, but volunteering takes place anywhere between Crofton & Reading.
Why we want you
Our Conservator volunteers help maintain our network by carrying out heritage and nature conservation activities, as well as everyday tasks like painting or litter picking to improve the local environment.
They help address tough issues on the waterways, ensuring the canal remains accessible and well maintained. As the network faces new challenges each year, your support will help us keep the canals alive.
Some activities are carried out regularly, while others are project-based, such as rebuilding stone walls or planting, allowing volunteers to give their time in different ways.
What you will be doing
* Day-to-day maintenance
* Heritage restoration
* Graffiti removal
* Environmental enhancements such as hedgelaying
* Creating new access points by building or improving steps or ramps
* When registering as a volunteer, we will ask about any unspent convictions for risk assessment purposes.
