Job Summary
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in South East London is a large teaching hospital at the forefront of academic and nursing excellence. At the heart of King’s is the Variety Children’s Hospital (VCH) offering a wide range of services and specialities for children and young people at local, regional, and international levels. Within the VCH is a 16‑bed Children’s Critical Care Centre providing both high dependency (HDU) and intensive care management.
Working in the Children’s Critical Care Centre will provide you with the opportunity to care for intensive‑care and high‑dependency patients admitted under a variety of specialties, including:
* Neurosurgery
* Trauma
* General medicine and surgery
* Liver disease and liver transplantation
* Small bowel transplantation

Main Duties

Key Responsibilities
* Deliver evidence‑based, patient‑focused clinical care, maintaining high standards of care and adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Involve and support patients, relatives, carers and friends in the care process and promote well‑being through education.
* Maintain accurate written and verbal information and contemporaneous record‑keeping.
* Seek advice from more senior or experienced staff when appropriate.
* Work effectively as part of the immediate team and the multidisciplinary team, liaising with all MDT members to meet patient needs.
* Exercise leadership and initiative, providing support to ward/unit staff, especially junior staff, on clinical and administrative issues.
* Collaborate with discharge coordinators, bed managers and charge nurses to ensure effective patient admission and discharge.
* Observe duty of care for the health, safety and well‑being of yourself, colleagues and patients.
* Adhere to all Kings College Hospital NHS Trust Foundation policies and statutory obligations, maintain patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy.
* Show respect for equality and diversity, respecting cultural, religious, gender, ethnic and sexual identities.
* Follow infection control protocols and professional development, staying current with nursing and medical knowledge.
* Act as a role model, supervisor, preceptor and mentor for junior staff, and participate in trust and divisional initiatives.
Person Specification
Essential
* Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration.
* Proficiency in dispensing and administering oral & IV medication.
* Ability to manage deteriorating patients and address emotional needs with empathy.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Collaboration with other staff members.
Desirable
* Acute experience within a paediatric setting.
