About Andover Trees United (ATU)
Andover Trees United was set up in 2011. It is an award-winning, community-led environmental charity with a mission to educate, engage and empower people of all ages to take action for the environment. We work in partnership with schools, community groups and volunteers to deliver hands-on projects in conservation, climate education and community regeneration. Our Branching Out strategy highlights the need for stronger communications to build a wider audience, inspire the next generation, and ensure our work is clearly understood and valued. This role has been created to deliver that goal.
Purpose of the Role
The Publicity & Communications Officer will take the lead in developing a clear and coherent communications strategy. They will strengthen ATU's brand identity, manage all publicity and PR, and ensure our work is communicated in a way that grows our reach, engages new and existing audiences, and empowers young people and communities to take action on the climate and nature crises.
Article 12.8 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals states that by 2030, people everywhere should have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature. This post directly contributes to that ambition by ensuring ATU's messaging is clear, compelling and far-reaching.
Key Responsibilities
Brand, PR & Publicity
* Build a clear and consistent brand identity for ATU to improve understanding of its work locally, regionally and nationally.
* Manage all PR and publicity activity, including but not limited to website, newsletters, social media, broadcast, print and press.
* Ensure all messaging is coherent, accessible and aligned with ATU's mission and strategy.
Social Media & Content
* Create compelling content across digital platforms, crafting regular, engaging posts for target audiences.
* Research and write case studies including volunteer spotlights and project features.
* Produce blogs, newsletters, videos and creative materials to showcase ATU's impact and expertise.
* Manage brand guidelines and ensure consistency across all content.
Campaigns & Engagement
* Work with Trustees, Officers and the Management Committee to set targets for increasing ATU's audience and reach.
* Provide regular evaluation of communications, PR and publicity activity through engagement data, web and social analytics.
* Collaborate with the Community Engagement Officer to use improved brand identity to recruit new volunteers and supporters.
* Develop and maintain strong links with stakeholders and supporters including individuals, schools, businesses, authorities, funders, and youth/community groups.
Media Relations
* Draft and distribute press releases.
* Build and maintain positive relationships with local, regional and national media outlets.
* Proactively seek opportunities for coverage in print, broadcast and online media.
Monitoring & Reporting
* Assist in gathering, recording and analysing data for evaluation and impact measurement.
* Provide regular feedback through meetings and written reports to ensure Trustees and the Management Committee remain well-informed of progress.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, able to inspire people to connect to nature and to work closely within a team. The candidate would have experience of independent project management and recording, be an excellent communicator, well organised yet able to respond quickly to changing circumstances and able to use digital tools for organising and promoting projects.
Essential
* Batchelor's degree or equivalent in Marketing Communications/PR or proven experience in PR, communications, marketing or journalism.
* Proficiency in IT tools such as Excel, G-Suite, Mailchimp and other digital platforms
* Strong experience in managing social media and growing engaged audiences including familiarity with SEO principles and best practices.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to different audiences.
* Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate communications campaigns.
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
* Passion for environmental issues, youth engagement and community involvement.
* Ability to work flexibly, independently and collaboratively.
* Hold a clean driving licence and have access to own car insured appropriately for work-use
* Willingness to undertake additional training as required
Desirable
* Experience in the charity or environmental sectors.
* Understanding of behaviour change campaigns or climate education.
* Experience producing creative content (graphics, video, photography).
