Job Description:
We work closely with major silicon companies to optimise Ubuntu for their latest hardware.
As a software engineering manager, you need to bring both technical and management skills to lead your team. You will oversee an engineering team working across the full Linux stack—from kernel to GUI—to optimise Ubuntu, the world’s most widely used Linux desktop and server, for the latest silicon.
You will also represent the team in partner engagement and ensure timely delivery of project milestones.
As an engineering manager at Canonical, your primary responsibility is to support your team: ensuring their growth, meaningful work, and a positive work environment. You will lead strong engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering team development. You will influence the team culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate on strategy and execution.
What you’ll do
* Lead a distributed engineering team to design and implement Ubuntu integration for the latest IoT and server-class hardware platforms and software stacks.
* Engage with partners to deliver an optimised Ubuntu experience on their platforms.
* Develop your team through coaching, mentoring, leading by example, and feedback.
* Oversee commercial engagements and support project milestones.
* Maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
* Collaborate with other teams at Canonical to align on product architecture and roadmaps.
* Work from home with occasional travel up to twice a year for two weeks.
Who you are
* You have experience with Linux distributions, debian packaging, and high-performance server hardware.
* You have worked directly with customers, resolving technical issues and understanding their business challenges.
* You have managed or led a team of software engineers.
* You understand agile development methodologies.
* You collaborate effectively across teams, building trust and delivering results.
* You possess excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral.
* You hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a technology field.
