Job title: Vehicle (Van and Truck) Technician – night shift available

Salary: £36,363

Hours: 37 per week

Times: Mon to Thur 15:45pm to midnight, Fri 12:15pm to 18:15pm

Location: Torre Road Depot, 225a York Road, LS9 7QQ (some off‑site work)

About The Role

This role is integral to our Fleet Services provision, responsible for the essential maintenance and repair of the council’s vehicle fleet of over 1,200 vehicles across a range of types. Duties include maintaining cars, vans, tippers, welfare buses, large goods, refuse vehicles, and other municipal vehicles.


Applicants Should Hold

* City and Guilds 4101 (Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair) or
* Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles, 383 – full level 2 or 3
* Automotive Qualification NVQ level 3 or Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, 381 – part 2 or 3 or equivalent
* Full category B manual driving licence (category C (LGV) & D1 (minibus) licences an advantage)

Job Purpose

To inspect, service, repair and maintain the council’s fleet of light commercial, heavy goods and specialist municipal vehicles in accordance with statutory regulations and council policy.


Responsibilities

* Inspect, service, repair, maintain and diagnose faults on the full range of vehicles operated and managed by Leeds City Council in line with expected timelines.
* Carry out safety inspections on all vehicle types and record findings.
* Maintain a suitable personal toolbox and tool selection for inspection, service, repair, maintenance and diagnostics.
* Undertake training and mentoring of apprentices and trainees.
* Identify parts required and coordinate with stores to procure parts cost‑effectively and timely.
* Carry out accurate fault diagnosis of vehicle and specialist equipment defects.
* Perform vehicle repair work on‑site or roadside as required.
* Keep all work areas clean and safe; conduct cleaning pre and post repairs.
* Report and repair defects revealed during repairs, including preventive work where appropriate.
* Complete all job‑related documentation, using fixed and mobile computer systems.
* Work safely, observing all relevant safety procedures including on‑site work.
* Attend relevant computer, product or other training to maintain competence.
* Use GPS mobile workshop vehicles in compliance with requirements.
* Work within scheduled repair times.
* Maintain compliance with safety inspection regime, health and safety, environmental, DVSA, and operator licence requirements.
* Ensure all documentation is correctly completed and authorised.
* Adhere to statutory and regulatory guidelines, pandemic and sickness requirements.
* Leverage IT technology to deliver an efficient and effective fleet maintenance service.
* Build good working relationships with managers and staff to provide satisfactory service.
* Contribute to continuous service improvements and departmental/authority improvements.
* Participate in appraisal, training and development activities.
* Improve practice through observation, evaluation, discussion, and appropriate CPD programmes.
* Collaborate with colleagues and seek help when needed.
* Attend relevant meetings, training days and events as requested.
* Adhere to council policies and procedures, including child protection, health, safety, security, confidentiality, and data protection.
* Support equality and anti‑discriminatory practices, challenge racism, bullying, harassment, victimisation and abuse.
* Accept additional duties within the spirit of the role as commensurate with the job evaluation.
* Work within the flexibility protocol adopted by the council.


Qualifications Required

* City and Guilds 4101 (Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair)
* Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles, 383 – level 2 or 3

* Understand the Council’s Customer Care Policies
* Self‑development commitment to perform duties efficiently and effectively
* Communicate in written and oral technical language
* Numerate for measuring tasks and tool setting
* Knowledge of operator licence requirements and documentation
* Knowledge of health and safety procedures, risk assessment and COSHH requirements
* High degree of manual dexterity
* Three years continuous in a commercial repair/service environment
* Basic metal fabrication skills
* Basic electrical system repair skills
