Deputy Legal Services Manager (Contentious)
Staffordshire County Council is seeking a Deputy Legal Services Manager (DLSM). The DLSM will play a key role by ensuring effective management and supervision across the Legal Services Team. The role involves direct line management of G12 and/or G13 lawyers and Trainee Solicitors. The DLSM will lead the Contentious Team, support the Legal Services Manager and County Solicitor, attend operational and budget meetings, and act as an agent for change to shape the team and achieve objectives.
Main Responsibilities
* Work closely with the Monitoring Officer, County Solicitor and Legal Services Manager to facilitate effective governance within the Council, conducting day‑to‑day operations and ensuring legal services governance and decision‑making processes are efficient.
* Manage any relevant designated budget, ensuring financial rigour and maximising income where possible.
* Participate in, and lead if required, briefings to enhance policy development and decision‑making functions, such as Business Briefs.
* Assist the Legal Services Manager as a change agent, exploring technology and other improvements to service delivery.
* Deputise for the Legal Services Manager as required, supporting the agenda of change and improved service levels, emphasising innovation, responsiveness and flexibility to meet internal client needs.
Ideal Candidate
* Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with a current practising certificate or equivalent and rights to conduct litigation.
* Substantial experience in a relevant legal environment.
* Proven experience managing a team of legal professionals in a dynamic environment to deliver high‑standard services.
* Experience independently undertaking complex legal casework to a high standard meeting Council requirements.
* Strong knowledge of in‑house legal practice to contribute to future service plans.
* Effective oral and written communication, influencing and negotiating skills.
* People‑management, motivation and coaching skills.
* Ability to analyse and explain complex legal matters in concise language.
