Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Dietetic Assistant with an interest in paediatrics to join the Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetic Department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The department provides specialist Nutrition and Dietetic services across Charing Cross, St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospitals. This post will be based at St Mary’s Hospital and will support the delivery of the Paediatric Food Allergy Service. The hours are currently worked over five weekday mornings.

The successful candidate will work closely with Paediatric Dietitians to support the provision of the food allergy service. The role includes both administrative and clinical support duties under the supervision of a registered Dietitian. Previous experience in nutrition or healthcare would be advantageous, although full support and training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

1. To assist qualified therapy staff to deliver patient care, assessment and treatment including individual and group sessions.
2. To carry out tasks, activities and responsibilities delegated by a qualified therapist. To follow instructions of treating qualified therapist to treat patients following a designated treatment plan.
3. Gain valid informed consent prior to and as an ongoing process of any intervention. To work within a legal framework, under the supervision of a qualified therapist, including for those patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
4. To communicate with patients, carers and relatives to obtain specific information as directed by the therapist.
5. Care Certificate competencies will need to be achieved within six months of commencement of employment.
6. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with the legal requirements, trust guidelines and professional standard of practice.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

7. General Education to GCSE level including English/ equivocal English qualification.

Desirable criteria

8. Care Certificate
9. Undergone relevant theoretical and practical work-based training or holds academic/NVQ level III qualification.
10. Previous Physiotherapy / Occupational Therapy / Speech and Language or Dietetic Assistant experience.

Experience

Essential criteria

11. Experience of working with the public.
12. Previous experience of caring for people in or outside of work
13. Demonstrates knowledge of health care delivery.
14. Experience of administrative work e.g. photocopying, filing.
15. Experience working in a team.
16. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the role of the relevant therapy professions.

Desirable criteria

17. Previous experience of working within therapy departments.
18. Previous experience of working in hospital setting

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

19. Able to follow instruction and work both independently and within a team carrying out clinical and administration duties.
20. Demonstrate insight into caring/supportive role.
21. Demonstrates ability to prioritise own workload in order to meet deadlines.
22. Understanding of the therapy support worker role and its limitations and be able and willing to seek advice and assistance from qualified staff as required.
23. Knowledge of health and safety, diversity and confidentiality issues.

26. Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation.
27. Able to work flexibly based on the needs of the service.
28. Ability to comprehend and work within the Trusts policies and procedures.

31. Experience in UK health care system.
32. Knowledge of basic administrative processes
