Job Description: Your Impact Do you want to be the Technical Authority responsible for assurance and certification across our Electronic Warfare (EW) and Future Combat Air Systems (FCAS) portfolios? Our Design Integrity function is recruiting an Independent Technical Authority to provide independent compliance verification and certification assurance for airborne systems. The role holds accountability for product integrity and regulatory compliance across Electronic Warfare and Future Combat Air Programmes. You will act as an independent Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE), reviewing and approving certification and release artefacts including: Declarations of Design Performance (DDP), F100A documentation, and Product Integrity Certificates, ensuring alignment with MAA, EASA, and applicable customer regulatory frameworks. The role requires authoritative oversight of software and hardware assurance activities, including compliance with DO‑178C, DO‑254, and provision of SME guidance to technical leads and Programme Chief Engineers. You will also define and adapt assurance and certification strategies to support innovative technologies, while maintaining regulatory compliance and design integrity governance. Please note that this is a hybrid role and can be based out of any of our following locations: Luton, Lincoln, Bristol, or Southampton. In addition to this, regular travel will be required within the UK, with occasional international trips. Key Accountabilities: Act as an Independent Technical Authority and Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) for airborne systems, providing objective assurance of design integrity, safety and regulatory compliance. Define, agree and maintain the certification basis for Product Safety and Product Environmental Impact, including customer requirements, UK Military Airworthiness Regulations (MRP), EASA regulations, MOD policy and derived obligations. Establish and assess Claims‑Arguments‑Evidence (CAE) to support Product Safety, Environmental Impact and Airworthiness cases. Review, approve and authorise certification and release artefacts, including Declarations of Conformity, safety/environmental statements and supporting compliance evidence. Provide authoritative airworthiness, safety and regulatory advice to Programme Chiefs, Technical Leads and IPTs, ensuring compliance, producibility, fitness for purpose and operational suitability. Chair and sign system, product and service design reviews within delegated authority, ensuring alignment with design governance and certification requirements. Review IPT Engineering Plans for compliance with company policy, MAA/EASA expectations, design governance and certification strategy. Participate in Product Safety Panels, airworthiness forums and regulatory working groups, monitoring and interpreting changes to UK, European and international regulation. Provide independent guidance on best practice, standards and legislation, including safety, environmental protection and military airworthiness. Participate in supplier and vendor assessments, assuring regulatory competence, capability maturity and compliance. Hold delegated authority as company and board signatory for design certification activities. Deputise for the Chief Engineer – Design Integrity as required. Represent Design Integrity, Leonardo Electronics in external regulatory, customer and industry forums. Develop and deliver training and briefings on airworthiness, regulatory governance and certification, presenting with authority to senior technical and non‑technical audiences. What you’ll bring Recognised as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a relevant domain. Recognised as a SME for technology area, such as Software or Electronics/Hardware. Have hands-on experience of product certification to recognised standards including experience in Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance (ITEA) for airborne products. Are familiar with managing Product safety. Understand regulatory environment for airborne products, e.g. MAA, EASA. Ideally are CEng. Ideally are familiar with managing product security and cyber. Understand DO-178C, DO254 or similar standards. Experience of delivering training and awareness courses. Have worked with others to identify future Regulatory needs. Are an active member of an external specialist group or forum.
