Role Overview
Provide health physics monitoring services to support radiological safety, waste management, and regulatory compliance across nuclear operations. The role involves routine and non‑routine radiological surveys, contamination control, waste clearance, and operational support to ensure compliance with ionising radiation regulations and site‑specific procedures. This position requires independent decision‑making in dynamic radiological environments, along with the ability to support and mentor junior personnel in radiological protection practices. You will play a key role in maintaining compliance and promoting a strong radiological safety culture across multiple projects.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct routine and ad‑hoc radiological surveys (dose rate, contamination, airborne activity)
* Support implementation of Local Rules and radiological work instructions
* Assist in the designation and control of Supervised and Controlled Areas
* Monitor and report radiological conditions in work areas
* Support contamination control, waste clearance, and decontamination activities
* Maintain accurate records of monitoring results and incidents
* Assist with radiological incident response and emergency preparedness
* Support senior Radiation Protection personnel as required
* Ensure correct use of PPE/RPE and report deficiencies
* Participate in pre‑job briefings and post‑job reviews
* Liaise with operational teams to ensure radiological risks are understood and controlled
* Produce survey sheets, reports, presentations, and monitoring data clearly and accurately
* Attend required training to maintain competency as a Health Physics Monitor
* Perform air sampling, smear sampling, and bioassay collection where required
* Carry out daily operational checks on radiation monitoring equipment and report faults
* Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to junior Health Physics staff

Required Training
* Health Physics Monitoring qualification (e.g. City & Guilds Level 1 Radiation Protection or NVQ Level 2 equivalent)
* Radiation safety awareness and contamination control training
* Emergency response and incident reporting training
* Radiological waste monitoring training
* Environmental radiological sampling training
* Refresher training in line with site procedures and regulatory standards
* IOSH Working Safely (or equivalent)
Requirements
Essential Knowledge & Qualifications
* Strong understanding of radiological protection principles and IRR17
* Knowledge of ionising radiation legislation, environmental permitting, and general HSE compliance
* Ability to interpret radiological data and apply ALARP principles
* Eligibility to obtain security clearance, including identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, and UK residency requirements
Skills
* Use of radiological monitoring equipment (e.g. contamination probes, dose rate meters)
* Record keeping and data management
* Understanding of radiological compliance requirements
* Strong communication and teamwork skills
* Competent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

Experience
* Previous experience in a Health Physics or radiological monitoring role
* Experience working in regulated or industrial environments
* Experience within nuclear facilities preferred
* Familiarity with gamma spectroscopy, radiological characterisation, or waste clearance monitoring desirable
