About the Museum Of Freemasonry
Founded in 1838 by the United Grand Lodge of England, the Museum of Freemasonry is a fully accredited museum, library and archive that houses one of the world’s largest collections of books, manuscripts and artefacts relating to the history of fraternal societies. It welcomes visitors from across the world free of charge Tuesday to Friday, and offers researchers access to its extensive collections by appointment. Purpose Of The Job
The Director of the Museum of Freemasonry (MoF) is the Head of Collections overseeing the management, conservation and access to the museum, library and archives. The Director will lead teams, work with the Chairman and charitable trustees, promote and explain the collection to audiences, oversee conservation and display, organise events, exhibitions, seminars and outreach, and develop strategies for acquisitions, research support, fundraising and grant acquisition. The role also includes managing an annual budget of approximately £0.6 million and providing strong leadership to MoF staff.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage staff, drawing on their strengths to meet the MoF’s goals and the needs of users.
* Work with the Chairman and charitable trustees to develop and implement strategic plans, monitor achievement, assess risk and pursue external fundraising.
* Act as the public face of the MoF, raising its profile and building its reputation.
* Maintain day‑to‑day responsibility for budgets and financial management.
* Develop a volunteer base to support staff.
* Oversee the interpretation of the MoF’s collections, ensuring permanent displays, temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and online presence meet the needs of key users and are accessible to the widest audience.
* Ensure the MoF remains one of the leading masonic collections in the world.
* Identify and nurture key relationships to enhance resources, influence and relevance to key user groups.
* Manage the MoF’s collections effectively to ensure appropriate presentation and accessibility.
Essential Attributes
* Energetic, creative, resilient, financially aware and entrepreneurial manager capable of realising a practical vision for the MoF.
* Proven leadership experience.
* Experience in the museum, library or archives sectors and ability to relate across these domains.
* Experience building and maintaining partnerships, working with tact and diplomacy to achieve shared goals.
* Interest in the field and demonstrable enthusiasm for the organisation and the collection.
* Bachelor’s degree level in a relevant subject.
Desirable Attributes
* Knowledge of fraternal organisations and/or 18th and 19th century social history.
* Experience managing collections.
* Knowledge of digitisation and cataloguing.
* Postgraduate qualification in a relevant area (Museum or Curatorial studies, History).
* Doctorate in a relevant field or topic.
Salary
£60,000 – £70,000 gross per annum (subject to experience) plus the following benefits package:

Hours
35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
