Position Overview

Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist
Service Line: Female Low Secure and Deaf Service
Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director
Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced part‑time/any 3 days per week Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Bury Dunes and provide senior medical cover on Lower West Ward, our 13‑bed low secure ward for women. The role is due to start 31st March 2026 (but can be negotiated if required). The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients, audit the medical services rendered at the ward and ensure quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.

Lower West Ward is a 12‑bed low secure ward for women. The service offers individualized assessment, care and treatment of a wide range of mental disorders alongside complex communication needs and supports both hearing and Deaf women.


Responsibilities

* Lead the provision of high‑quality care to the service users admitted to Lower West Ward.
* Act as a positive role model, maintaining a positive attitude towards patients, families, visitors and other staff.
* Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users.
* Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatment.
* Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews & clinical audits.
* Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance within the service.
* Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals & managers' hearings & attend hearings.
* Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required.
* Maintain patient records and ensure accurate documentation.
* Communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
* Contribute to academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD set by the GMC, Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Participate in the Telephone On‑call rota (1 in 13 weekdays / 1 in 15 weekends).


Qualifications

* Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
* Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC status.
* Experienced & knowledgeable in General Adult Psychiatry / Forensic Psychiatry.
* Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
* First‑rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes.
* Committed to continued professional development.
* Able to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.


Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS and reference check and an offer of employment will be subject to successful clearance.
