Community and Special School Nurse for Children with Disabilities

The Children’s Community Nursing Team, based at The Moor Lane Centre, Chessington, delivers specialist nursing care to children and young people with SEND in Dysart and Bedelsford special schools, at home and within community services. The nursing team forms part of the Integrated Service for Children with Disabilities (ISCD), working across health, education and social care.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, proactive nurses to work flexibly across the community and in our special schools delivering holistic, family centered care for children and young people with complex health needs and disabilities. This is a dynamic role encompassing:

1. Assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of clinical nursing care.
2. Delivery of specialist nursing care, including but not limited to: administration of medication, suctioning, tracheostomy care, gastrostomy management and enteral feeding, seizure management.
3. Holistic family support for children/ young people and their families, including signposting to specialist services.
4. Delivery of specialist training for families and care support staff.
5. Attendance at multi- professional meetings, including child protection case conferences.
6. Providing health advice for education, health and care plans.
7. Nursing sleep service- supporting children with sleep difficulties, reviewing sleep medication and offering support and strategies to parents.
8. Mentoring, supporting and supervising junior staff and student nurses.

About you

9. Registered Children’s Nurse (RN Child/RSCN). RGN will be considered with relevant experience.
10. Minimum 2 years post qualification experience in nursing.
11. Community /special school nursing experience.
12. Experience working with children and young people with disabilities / complex health needs.
13. Knowledge of statutory legislation (for example Children’s Act) and national policy drivers that will affect children’s services and your role
14. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.
15. Experience supporting staff and students and providing supervision.
16. Experience working with challenging families and ability to manage conflict.
17. Ability to work independently and manage own workload with minimal supervision.
18. Safeguarding knowledge and experience.
19. Ability to work well as part of a team.
20. Car driver and access to a car for work purposes
