Senior Safety Assessment Specialist

Closing Date: 28th April 2026

Location: RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

Hybrid working is available for this role on an informal, non-contractual basis. Typically, 2 days onsite per week.

Package: £45,760 - £72,340 per annum (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

A relocation package may be available (terms and conditions apply).

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Just let us know your preferred working pattern on your application.

AWE is seeking a Senior Safety Assessment Specialist to support and deliver our Leadership & Management for Safety (LMfS) and Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) culture assessment programme with a focus on:

Leadership and Management for Safety

Positive SHEQ Culture assessment

Nuclear Professionalism

This is a high-profile and rewarding opportunity to help shape, influence and strengthen AWE's SHEQ culture. You'll work across the organisation, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and contributing directly to our unique mission.

A strong understanding of why SHEQ culture matters - how it enhances performance, improves risk management, creates value and provides a positive working environment - is essential in this role.

What You'll be Doing:

Planning and delivering SHEQ culture assessments and Leadership and Management for Safety Assessments across all functions within the organisation.

Designing and running surveys, followed by interviews with individual employees across the business.

Producing insightful reports on Positive SHEQ Culture and Leadership & Management for Safety.

Providing feedback, learning and analysis to senior leaders and key stakeholders.

Supporting AWE's compliance with Licence and Authorisation Conditions, regulatory expectations, and legislation.

Managing AWE's Nuclear Professionalism accreditation, including training coordination and delivery, and maintaining e-learning content and Portal pages.

Contributing to organisation-wide communications on SHEQ culture, aligned to 'We Care' activities.

Who are we looking for?

This role may suit individuals from an organisational behaviour, psychology, or traditional health and safety background.

We do need you to have the following:

Understanding of Nuclear Site Licence/Authorisation Conditions.

Understanding of regulatory requirements in relation to safety culture and safety culture assessment.

Awareness of UK and international safety standards relating to leadership and safety culture in a nuclear organisation.

Solid understanding of Leadership & Management for Safety principles.

Excellent communication and engagement skills, tailored to people across the enterprise, from our Frontline Workers to the senior leadership team.

An ability to question and to retrieve information from multiple sources.

Confidence in working with data, analytics and report writing.

A commitment to promoting good practice across the organisation.

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:

Working in a high hazard and/or highly regulated industry (ideally nuclear).

Applying safety culture assessment methodologies.

Understanding regulatory requirements within the nuclear industry.

Developing and delivering training.

Conducting interviews, audits and data analysis.

You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

You should be willing to travel, when required, to AWE's sites across the UK.
