Mentor (Volunteer) Gwent Wide Mentors play a vital role in helping children discover motivation, develop life skills, build confidence and self-esteem. Through engaging activities and positive relationships, mentors channel children’s energy into meaningful projects that foster a sense of personal achievement. Mentors are not therapists, counsellors, or support workers—they are consistent, positive role models who offer encouragement, praise, and guidance, helping children become well-adjusted, happy, and confident individuals. The mentoring programme adopts a solution-focused, person-centred, trauma-informed, and child-led approach, promoting positive change and increased self-esteem through meaningful and supportive relationships. Children are encouraged to lead their own development, supported by mentors who respond to their unique needs, interests, and pace. This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check and completion of mentor induction training Specific Responsibilities Meet individually with an assigned child or young person or assist in the facilitation of group-based sessions. Collaborate with children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse to set and work towards personal goals. Utilise a strengths-based approach to: Empower young people to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. Build resilience and confidence. Equip them with the skills and strategies needed to make positive and informed choices for their future. Collaborate as part of a diverse team, drawing on your skills, experience, and expertise to deliver a high-quality, specialist service for children and young people. Demonstrate initiative in responding effectively and appropriately to challenges. Work flexibly, including outside standard hours, to accommodate the needs and availability of the child or young person. Participate in monthly supervision and review meetings with your supervisor (Team Leader) to contribute to action planning and identify opportunities for further progress and signposting, provide constructive feedback to clients and relevant agenices. General Responsibilities: Collaborate with colleagues to maintain and enhance the quality of service delivery. Attend meetings as requested. Participate in regular supervision and support sessions. Represent the organisation professionally and positively, upholding its ethos and providing comprehensive feedback as required. Engage in initial mentor training and undertake ongoing professional development in line with the organisation’s Training and Development Policy. Maintain a commitment to anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practices in all aspects of work. Adhere to the organisation’s safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection policies and procedures. Consistently demonstrate integrity, openness, and honesty, and ensure personal conduct, as well as that of any staff within your area of responsibility, promotes inclusivity, supports diversity, and avoids any form of judgment or bias. Performance and Quality Volunteers are expected to adhere to established mentoring guidelines to ensure high standards of service delivery. Time Commitment: Mentors are required to contribute 2–4 hours per week. Availability for evening, weekend, and bank holiday work may be necessary to meet the needs of the service and the young people being supported.
