Junior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine (Harefield Hospital)

The intensive care unit has over 1500 level 3 admissions per annum and 18 level 3 beds, a further 5 cardiac recovery level 3 beds and 10 high dependency level 2 beds. The case‑mix is mainly intensive care following adult cardiac surgery (78% admissions), transplantation (11%), cardiology (6%) and thoracic surgery (7%).

Main duties
Clinical duties
* Participate in the intensive care junior rota (EWTD compliant) in a 9‑week rolling shift system, comprising a 4‑week block of cover to the intensive care unit with late and night shifts with additional day‑time duties in the recovery unit and the high dependency unit. Rota may change to a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 rota in August 2026.
* Work within a team of 15 consultants; collaborate with consultants, anaesthesia and other specialists.
* Provide care for patients following adult cardiac surgery, transplantation, cardiology and thoracic surgery.
* Support base specialty activities as mutually agreed with the clinical lead for Intensive Care and relevant service leads.
Other responsibilities
Clinical experience & training
* Acquire critical care competencies per the Faculty of Intensive Care Curriculum at basic level.
* Develop skills in ventilation strategies, ALI/ARDS management, differential and prone ventilation, renal replacement therapy, haemodynamic monitoring (pulmonary artery catheter, non‑invasive cardiac output), extracorporeal life support, postoperative cardiac surgical patient management.
* Gain expertise in trans‑oesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography, critical care ultrasound, percutaneous tracheostomy, intra‑aortic counter‑pulsation therapy, pacing, and other advanced cardiac techniques.
* Participate in audit projects, research projects, and contribute to local research initiatives.
* Attend mandatory training sessions at the Harefield SIM centre and present at departmental education programme.
* Training in TOE and critical care ultrasound, including simulator sessions and potential external courses.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Eligible for full GMC registration.
* Training or equivalent experience in Intensive Care Medicine.
* Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).
* Training in Echocardiography.
* Experience in mechanical circulatory support.

Skills, knowledge and abilities
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills aligned with the trust's core behaviours.
* Proficiency in IT and computer literacy.
Salary
£54,499 a year pro rata, excl. London Zone Allowance
