We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well‑motivated individual with a good scientific background to complement our existing Microbiology MLA team. The role is based at Frimley Park Hospital and supports the joint venture of Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services.
Location and Working Pattern
Frimley Park Hospital, Port HMS Road, Frimley, Camberley, GU16 7UJ. On rare occasions work may be required at Wexham Park Hospital. Full‑time, shift‑based working system with participation in routine and non‑core hours.
Responsibilities
* Assist in the preparation of analytical work for the Bacteriology Department across a range of areas under the supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
* Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times for any tasks carried out.
* Communicate with pathology staff, hospital staff, porters, drivers and couriers.
* Provide support to the Biomedical Scientist staff.
* Assist in the diagnostic work of the department, including sorting, numbering and entering samples into the Laboratory Information Management System.
* Operate the department waste disposal systems, including the use of autoclaves, in a safe manner.
* Process various specimens such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, tissues and diverse secretions.
* Interpret processed samples for the presence of bacterial, fungal or parasitic pathogens.
* Assist with monitoring stock control of consumables in stores.
* Ensure cleaning and defrosting of equipment, such as fridges, freezers and incubators.
* Maintain IT systems: input patient and request data, amend patient records, interrogate laboratory and hospital databases, perform basic word processing and spreadsheet work.
* Perform administrative tasks, including archiving and retrieval of specimens and data, and maintenance of audit trails.
* Maintain a clean and safe working environment through good laboratory practice, including disposal of clinical waste and decontamination processes.
* Communicate effectively with other staff groups, both internal and external, including healthcare professionals, transport and portering staff.
* Assist in departmental work as instructed, following SOPs under the supervision of laboratory managers, team leaders and/or Biomedical Scientist staff.
* Participate fully in all aspects of the service, including routine and non‑core hours.
* Support career development and embrace new ways of working; participate in a shift system.
Qualifications
* Essential: GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A* to C in Mathematics, English Language and two relevant Science subjects.
* Desirable: Interest in working to a higher level of qualification and willingness to undergo relevant training.
Skills & Knowledge
* Essential: Ability to understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures; clear communication; basic IT skills; develop knowledge and understanding of microbiology techniques sufficient to undertake specimen processing and reception; follow laboratory health and safety practices; meet deadlines; write clearly; perform basic mathematical calculations; work as part of a team.
* Desirable: Understanding of service quality; experience of working in a relevant routine laboratory; ability to prioritise tasks and organise daily work; awareness that work relates directly to patient care; observant of detail and capable of making basic judgement decisions.
Experience
* Essential: Experience of performing technically challenging procedures where applicable.
* Desirable: Some experience of diagnostic microbiology; experience of team working; experience of working in a relevant routine laboratory.

This position is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Applicants must already hold the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the contract.
