Job Title: Toxicology Safety Scientist
Location: Colworth Science Park
JOB PURPOSE

As a Toxicology Safety Scientist in our Safety, Environmental & Regulatory (SERS) team, you will provide scientific expertise to assure the safety of Unilever ingredients for consumers who use our products and the workers who make them.
You will join a team of safety scientists, where you will be supported in your development and expected to help others grow. You will work with multidisciplinary teams (including biologists, bioinformaticians, computational chemists, and mathematical modellers) to apply novel, mechanistic approaches to safety assessment. You will also contribute to bringing robust, new science to our safety assessments, ensuring we meet current and future needs. You will work alongside some of the industry's most respected scientists, learning new risk assessment approaches, growing professionally, and enjoying opportunities to publish and present. The role is based at Colworth Science Park, Sharnbrook, near Bedford.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Assess human safety risks associated with ingredients, emphasizing novel (non-animal) approaches.
* Deliver transparent, well-documented, exposure-based risk assessments to enable robust decision-making, including clear communication of outcomes to maintain trust.
* Contribute to the evolution of exposure-driven risk assessment approaches, working with external groups.
* Develop an understanding of broader issues surrounding ingredient and product use.
* Be part of a team impacting how safety risk assessments are conducted and communicated now and in the future.
* Collaborate with internal SERS and Unilever scientists, as well as external partners, to provide expert advice on new scientific approaches to non-animal safety assessment.
* Promote acceptance and adoption of new scientific approaches externally through interactions with key opinion leaders.

You should be able to work effectively in cross-disciplinary and multicultural teams, with flexibility in a fast-changing environment.
We expect the successful candidate to have:
* A degree (BSc/MSc or equivalent) in Toxicology or a related discipline with relevant experience in product safety or industrial/occupational health.
* Experience in toxicology/consumer safety risk assessment within an industrial context (FMCG, healthcare).
* Awareness of novel, non-animal safety assessment methods and their potential applications.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying scientific information simply.
* A creative, problem-solving mindset.
* Self-motivation and a proven track record of effective collaboration in interdisciplinary teams.
* Ability to work with scientists from other disciplines as part of multidisciplinary teams.
* Strong team player qualities, both as a leader and a team member.
Desirable
* Knowledge of risk assessment approaches for carcinogens.
* Postgraduate experience or higher degree (e.g., PhD).
* Knowledge/experience of product safety regulations.
* Project leadership experience.
* Understanding of computational approaches in consumer safety risk assessment/toxicology.
