Position Summary
Applications are invited for a new, substantive Consultant in Feto-Maternal medicine to increase expertise in Fetal Medicine, high risk obstetrics & intrapartum management within the Trust and to provide leadership and innovation within the Perinatal Directorate.
All maternity services are provided at MMUH, delivering approximately 5000 women per year, where there is a large level 2+ NNU and full capability to provide HDU and ITU care to our mothers. There is a nationally recognised co‑located midwifery‑led birthing unit.
The Fetal Medicine Unit was newly developed and equipped in 2010 and provides a full range of FM diagnostic and screening services. It is a designated Level 2 FM Unit within the West Midlands and receives referrals from local units within Black Country & West Birmingham LMNS. The unit has well established links to allied regional services including the WM tertiary referral FMU, Regional Clinical Genetics and Fetal/Paediatric cardiology services and Birmingham Children’s hospital. Antenatal care is based on a specialist multidisciplinary clinic model with clinics being staffed by dual consultants. Consultants also work with specialist midwives and community midwifery leads in teams where this promotes better access to and contact with hard‑to‑reach groups to ensure equal access to high quality obstetric care.
Main Duties
• Provide specialist opinion and management within Fetal medicine (dedicated whole‑day scan list weekly) and Maternal medicine. Work in conjunction with specialist service teams.
• Attend fortnightly FM/Perinatal MDT meetings with neonatal colleagues and fortnightly high‑risk Obstetric MDT meetings with allied medical specialties including Obstetric Anaesthesia.
• Participate in region‑wide MDTs and meetings following the creation of formal Midlands‑wide Fetal medicine and Maternal Medicine networks.
• Deliver a dedicated fortnightly 12‑hour resident session covering the delivery suite / maternity unit with an allied 12‑hour non‑resident on‑call overnight. A 1:8 Friday and weekend daytime resident and overnight on‑call are included. No resident night‑time sessions.
• Further develop specialist training and research within Feto‑maternal medicine and complex pregnancies, complementing the Obstetric consultant team and providing high‑quality intrapartum care and training.
• Job plan is full‑time; LTFT work schedule is open for discussion subject to appointment.
