Earthing Design Engineer

Job Overview
We are seeking a
skilled and motivated Earthing Design Engineer
to join our electrical engineering team, supporting the design and delivery of
safe, compliant, and cost-effective earthing systems
across a wide range of energy infrastructure projects.
This role is critical to ensuring the
safety and reliability
of electrical networks, particularly within
high-voltage (HV), extra-high-voltage (EHV), and transmission environments
. As part of the wider electrical design team, you will be responsible for the protection of personnel and equipment within HV/EHV substations, ensuring that all equipment is safely connected to earth.
Main Duties
* Design and analyse earthing systems for substations, renewable energy sites (solar, wind, BESS), and grid connections.
* Produce drawings and documentation to support soil resistivity surveys and testing.
* Conduct soil resistivity testing, earth potential rise (EPR) studies, and touch/step voltage assessments.
* Model earthing systems using
CDEGS
, building on layouts provided by electrical design colleagues.
* Prepare clear and concise
technical reports, drawings, and specifications
for internal and external stakeholders.
* Ensure compliance with
UK and international standards, DNO/TSO policies, and project specifications
.
* Support commissioning and testing activities, including earth impedance and fall-of-potential measurements.
* Collaborate with civil, electrical, and protection engineers to integrate earthing into overall project designs.
* Provide technical responses and clarifications to site teams regarding earthing queries.
* Contribute to the development of
design risk assessments
and ensure quality assurance across all deliverables.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of
EMC and lightning protection
principles and practices.
What We're Looking For
* Degree, HND, or HNC in
Electrical Engineering
(Power Systems preferred).
* Proven experience in
earthing design
within the UK power industry (consultancy, contractor, or utility).
* Significant experience delivering designs for
DNO and ideally National Grid projects
.
* Proficiency in
CDEGS
software for earthing analysis.
* Strong knowledge of HV and EHV substation standards and installation practices in the UK.
* Ability to work proactively, solve problems, and coordinate across multiple design disciplines.
* Excellent technical writing and reporting skills.
* Working knowledge of UK and international standards, including:
* ENA TS 41-24
* BS EN 50522
* BS EN
* BS 7430
* NGTS RES)
* DNO G81 policies and procedures
