A leading retail trading business is seeking an experienced Trading Manager to join its central team. This role is key in driving national category performance through the development and execution of commercial strategies, hands-on supplier negotiations, and close collaboration with regional teams and suppliers.
A strong emphasis is placed on negotiation capability — the successful candidate must be a proven, hands-on negotiator, with direct experience of leading supplier discussions and securing commercially beneficial terms. This is a highly commercial, fast-paced role requiring strong stakeholder management, analytical ability, and a focus on delivering measurable results. Occasional travel to regional distribution centres and supplier sites may be required.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and deliver category plans to improve cost efficiency, margins, and availability
* Lead and personally manage supplier negotiations, securing volume and time-based agreements
* Own income forecasting and delivery against category targets
* Work with regional teams to agree national ranges and supplier strategies
* Create and manage promotional activity aligned with wider trading plans
* Manage supplier performance, risk, and improvement actions
* Negotiate cost price changes and manage stakeholder communication
* Ensure product availability and resolve supply issues
* Identify seasonal trading opportunities and manage clearance strategies
* Maintain awareness of relevant legislation and product safety
* Support junior team members and wider commercial projects
About You
* Experience in trading, buying, or category management within retail/FMCG
* Strong, demonstrable negotiation experience, having personally led supplier discussions
* Confident working with data to support decision making
* Highly organised and able to manage multiple priorities
* Strong communication and influencing skills
* Proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office
* Degree or commercial training beneficial but not essential
