About the team:
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is leading the government's mission to make Britain and clean energy superpower – increasing energy security, protecting bill payers and tackling climate change.
The talented professionals in the Communications Directorate are leading the way to tell the story, with simple, clear and creative communications to reach our audiences with original content.

About the role:
You will be operating at the very heart of government, helping to shape news coverage on issues that affect everyday lives.
As part of our News-desk, you will need to be quick, clear and decisive. You will play a proactive role in monitoring, spotting and addressing potential media issues, alongside providing swift and effective responses to media enquiries, and keeping the department abreast of developments.
You will also develop innovative communication plans across multiple platforms, including traditional print and broadcast media, as well as digital and social media channels. An essential part of this role is collaboration, and you will work closely with ministers, communication professionals and other stakeholders to create clear communication strategies and messaging.

Key responsibilities
We are looking for motivated individuals to join us as we lead one of the government's five missions.
Your key responsibilities will include:
* Media management – working on breaking stories, providing timely and accurate information to journalists, and responding to crisis and risks across our brief.
* Keen news sense - identifying emerging narratives online and opportunities to shape reporting, including through rebutting inaccuracies.
* Developing press materials – identifying stories and working with ministerial and policy teams to bring the work of the department to life.
* Evaluation - consider successes and lessons learnt to inform future proactive and reactive media campaigns.
* Participate in the out-of-hours duty rota.
Essential criteria:
* Excellent understanding of the national news agenda and social media landscape, with strong news judgement and political awareness.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills – producing high quality written content such as press releases and briefings for a range of audiences.
* Proven ability to distil complex information into clear key messages.
* Strong prioritisation skills and comfortable working to tight deadlines, at pace.
* Strong team player, actively contributing to shared goals, supporting colleagues and fostering a positive team environment.
Desirable criteria:
* Experience of working either in a journalism/media/press office environment.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK.
