Section Engineer - Contract (Devonport, Plymouth)
Location: Devonport, Plymouth (full-time site based)
Rate: Up to £450/day (Umbrella PAYE, all-in)
Hours: 45 hours per week (approx. 08:00-17:00)
Contract: Ongoing contract role
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to take ownership of a defined section of works on a major infrastructure project at Devonport, within a live MOD environment.
Reporting into line management, you will lead site engineering activities, ensuring technical compliance, quality delivery, and safe execution of works. This role requires a proactive approach, strong coordination skills, and the ability to manage junior engineers while interfacing with subcontractors and key stakeholders.
Security & Eligibility (Essential)
Due to the nature of the project, candidates must be eligible for BPSS clearance (process can take up to 8 weeks).
To be considered, you must meet one of the following criteria:
Hold current valid UK security clearance, or
Be a British passport holder, or
Have resided in the UK continuously for the past 5 years
Key Responsibilities
Take engineering ownership for a defined section of works, ensuring delivery to programme and specification
Lead and coordinate site engineers and junior staff, providing technical guidance and oversight
Manage and verify setting out activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with design tolerances
Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
Oversee quality assurance processes including ITPs, inspections, and test plans
Ensure accurate and timely production of as-built records and documentation
Manage subcontractors from an engineering and quality perspective
Identify and resolve technical queries, raising RFIs where required
Monitor progress, maintain site records, and report on key deliverables
Ensure compliance with HSE, environmental, and quality standards on site
Support planning, procurement, and coordination of materials and resources
Requirements
Experience & Capability:
Proven experience operating as a Section Engineer (or strong Senior Site Engineer ready to step up) on major construction or infrastructure projects
Demonstrable experience managing sections of work and supervising engineering teams
Strong setting-out capability (Leica GPS / Total Station essential)
Extensive experience in reinforced concrete structures and system formwork
Strong understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing, and temporary worksQualifications & Tickets (Essential):
Valid CSCS card (White AQP)
Supervisor-level HSE test
Relevant civil engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent)Technical & Project Knowledge:
Strong working knowledge of QMS, ITPs, and RAMS
Experience managing technical documentation and site records
Familiarity with engineering software and digital QA systemsDesirable:
Experience within MOD, nuclear, or other highly regulated environments
Previous experience working on complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects
