Located in Newton Aycliffe, UK, we occupy a 10,000 m² purpose‑built Class 100 manufacturing facility fully equipped to produce state‑of‑the‑art compound semiconductor products.

Purpose of Role
Lead and embed a strong process safety culture across the business. Provide expert guidance to managers and operators on safe, efficient chemical plant design and operation. Ensure compliance with legislation, company policies, and industry standards through practical application of technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure chemical processes, waste streams, and equipment comply with legislation and internal safety standards.
* Inspect facilities and equipment to identify risks and implement controls.
* Lead HAZOP/CHAZOP studies and develop Cause & Effect Safety Matrices.
* Provide chemical engineering and plant design support across site operations.
* Liaise with regulators and consultants to maintain IPPC permit compliance.
* Develop and deliver site-wide process and chemical safety training.
* Oversee chemical handling, storage, distribution, and waste management, including Legionella control.
* Drive continuous improvement in process safety across facilities and cleanrooms.
* Monitor and report leading and lagging safety indicators.
* Develop safe operating procedures for chemical plant and equipment.
* Ensure safe transport, storage, and compatibility of chemicals, gases, and solutions.
* Implement spill response and loss-of-containment procedures and training.
* Optimise plant design and operations for safe, efficient performance.
* Apply ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
* Improve Basis of Safety through rationalised plant operations.
* Develop environmentally responsible chemical processes and equipment designs.
* Implement KPIs and dashboards to track safety and operational performance.
* Manage the safe lifecycle of chemicals and raw materials.
* Maintain and improve emergency response protocols and alarm investigation processes.
* Engage with regulators including HSE and the Environment Agency.
Experience
* Minimum 3 years’ experience in chemical engineering or chemistry within manufacturing.
* Experience developing and implementing process safety systems.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Skills
* Hazard identification and safety system design.
* HAZOP/CHAZOP expertise.
* Strong chemical engineering and plant design knowledge.
* Clear technical writing for operating and maintenance procedures.
* Proactive, organised, and results-focused.
* Strong communication and teamwork skills.
* Ability to coach and mentor colleagues.
Education & Qualifications
* Strong background in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.
* NEBOSH qualification.
