Merritts are looking for a Transport Manager that can utilise their skills and expertise for the challenges of industrial machinery relocation and heavy haulage projects. Do you thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments where precision, safety, and planning excellence are critical? If so, we'd love to hear from you.
We are a heavy machinery moving and installation specialist based in Nottinghamshire, serving a wide range of industrial sectors across the UK and into Europe. Due to continued growth and project demand, we're looking for a Transport Manager to expand our team.
Key Responsibilities
As Transport Manager, you'll be responsible for the safe, efficient, and legal operation of our transport fleet, lifting plant, and logistics planning, ensuring the smooth execution of complex heavy machinery relocation projects.
* Plan and coordinate the movement of abnormal loads, plant, and specialist transport equipment across the UK (and occasionally Europe).
* Manage the transport fleet (HGVs, vans, trailers, lifting plant, escort vehicles) including overseeing vehicle maintenance and inspections, scheduling, routing, and carrying out effective defect reporting and rectification processes.
* Ensure all transport activities comply with current legislation (including Operator Licence requirements, Working Time Directive, and Driver Hours regulations).
* Liaise with project managers, clients, site teams, and subcontractors to align transport logistics with installation schedules.
* Support our Operations Department, Project Management and Health & Safety teams to ensure training, safety standards, and company values are upheld.
* Prepare movement orders, risk assessments, and method statements as required for heavy haulage operations.
* Work closely with external stakeholders including police, Highways England, permit authorities, and escort services for abnormal load movements.
* Monitor transport costs and contribute to project and departmental budgeting.
* Monitor and order relevant equipment and consumables for day to day operations.
Essential Requirements
* CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Road Haulage, preferably international.
* Proven experience managing transport operations, ideally within the heavy haulage, plant movement, or construction logistics sector.
* Strong understanding of UK and European transport regulations, including abnormal loads.
* Excellent planning, communication, and leadership skills.
* Comfortable with hands-on problem solving and decision-making in high-pressure environments.
* Competent with transport management systems (TMS), Microsoft Office, scheduling software, and digital tachograph systems, including tacho-analysis and infringement monitoring.
* Valid UK Driving Licence (HGV Class 1 would be a bonus, but not essential).
What We Offer
* Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.
* Company vehicle or car allowance.
* Opportunity to work on major UK and European industrial projects.
* Supportive, family-run company culture with real scope for progression.
* Training and development opportunities.
