We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation Practice, based in Birmingham. You will support high-profile projects like East West Rail Phase 2, HS2, Highways England East Region DSC, and the Central Rail Systems Alliance, among others, including civil engineering projects across the UK and abroad.
Your responsibilities include delivering civil and structural design packages for highways and rail schemes, supporting project management, resourcing, and ensuring schemes are delivered profitably, on time, and to quality standards.
You should have a civil engineering background and experience in multidisciplinary projects in highways, rail, or local authority environments, with familiarity working in large dispersed teams across project stages from feasibility to detailed design.
Qualifications:
* BEng / MEng or MSc in civil engineering or equivalent
* Chartered status and membership of ICE or IStructE
Expected Criteria:
* Industry experience, technical ability, communication, and stakeholder management skills
* Knowledge of civil or structural project design, maintenance, supervision, and innovation in highway or rail environments
* Experience in bridge design, assessment, or civil works delivery within railway settings
* Analytical skills and engineering judgment for problem-solving and option appraisal
* Ability to produce and review high-quality design documentation
* Technical review capabilities
* Experience working with clients like Network Rail, Local Authorities, Highways England, Developers, Contractors
* Support for bids and client relationship development
* Understanding of relevant standards (e.g., DMRB, MCHW, Eurocodes, Network Rail Standards)
* Scope development, technical supply chain management, budgeting, scheduling, quality delivery
* Project management, commercial awareness, stakeholder management skills
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across engineering disciplines
Desirable Criteria:
* Experience with software like LUSAS, MIDAS, Superstress, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design
* Knowledge of AASHTO Codes
* Experience with concrete repair or cathodic protection
* Experience in CRE or CEM roles for NR projects
