Role Purpose
We are seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist (with an interest in Critical Care) to support anaesthesia and critical care services across oncological specialties at The Christie.
Responsibilities
* Provide anaesthesia for patients undergoing oncological surgery and radiotherapy.
* Support radiology in radiotherapy sessions.
* Provide on‑call cover for the Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU) – an 8‑bedbed unit offering Level 2 and Level 3 care; on‑call rota 1:8 with a target of 1:10.
* Provide out‑of‑hours critical care support for the OCCU and wider hospital.
* Potential to support daytime critical care and paediatric anaesthesia services in proton beam therapy.
Job Plan
Total programmed activities: 10 PAs – 7.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PAs for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). 0.25 PA is allocated for supervision.
On‑Call Commitments
The role requires participation in a 1:8 on‑call rota for oncological critical care, attracting 2.2 PA allocation and a 5% on‑call supplement. A separate theatre on‑call rota exists for emergency surgery. Plans are in place to move towards a 1:10 rota, with a 3% on‑call supplement.
Job Planning and Development
On appointment, the candidate shall review and agree a job plan with the Joint Clinical Directors for Anesthesia and Critical Care, tailored to individual needs and specialist interests. The department offers opportunities for professional development and support for specialist interests in Critical Care.
Qualifications & Experience
Eligible candidates will hold a CCT in Anesthesia and demonstrate an active interest in Intensive Care Medicine. A specialist interest in Critical Care is encouraged and may influence job plan development.
