Overview
Principal Radiographer for Radiotherapy Clinical Education role at The Christie NHS FT. Lead the Radiotherapy Clinical Education team across The Christie\'s Radiotherapy and Proton Beam Therapy sites. Influence the development and delivery of high-quality clinical education within one of Europe\'s leading cancer centres.
The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of education across multiple sites, ensuring alignment with national standards and service priorities. Work with internal teams and external partners to support professional development, design structured training programmes, and promote a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the Radiotherapy Education Team, overseeing education delivery across all service areas.
* Develop and implement strategic education plans aligned with departmental and national goals.
* Coordinate and deliver specialist clinical education for learners and staff, including induction and competency-based programmes.
* Ensure compliance with regulatory and professional standards (HCPC, HEE, NHS frameworks).
* Promote interprofessional learning and collaborative practice across radiotherapy disciplines.
* Represent the service in regional and national education forums and lead curriculum development with HEIs.
* Champion innovation in education, including simulation, digital learning, and reflective practice.
* Manage the Radiotherapy Training Budget and contribute to workforce development initiatives.
* Lead on policy development for education and training across all geographical sites.
* Lead educational projects to design, implement and monitor clinical competencies for Proton Beam Therapy and radiotherapy service workforce.
* Deliver highly complex strategic direction of clinical radiotherapy education to large groups using meetings, lectures, presentations and conferences.
Clinical Education and Workforce Development
* Oversee coordination and delivery of specialist clinical education for pre-registration learners (undergraduate, postgraduate, apprentices, return-to-practice).
* Design, implement, evaluate structured induction and competency-based training for new staff.
* Support ongoing professional development across the four pillars of practice.
* Ensure education covers key radiotherapy practice areas, including clinical support, pre-treatment planning, treatment delivery, on-treatment imaging and verification, and patient-centred care.
* Safe and standardised design and delivery of training for local, highly complex radiotherapy equipment.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
* Contribute to the radiotherapy quality management system through educational audits and evaluations.
* Ensure activities comply with HCPC, HEE, and NHS frameworks.
* Maintain data management systems to record learner progress and update patient records and departmental databases as appropriate.
* Generate KPIs, analyse education productivity, and report to stakeholders.
* Lead communication and dissemination strategy across local and national systems.
* Conduct environmental audits and risk assessments of learning environments.
* Monitor mandatory training compliance across the education team.
Multi-Professional Education and Collaboration
* Deliver high-quality teaching to a diverse range of professionals (therapeutic radiographers, dosimetrists, clinical oncologists, medical physicists, nurses, admin/support).
* Facilitate interprofessional learning and assessment of clinical competence using validated tools.
* Support curriculum development and learner progression in partnership with HEIs and practice education leads.
Culture, Innovation and Resources
* Promote a culture of learning, inquiry, and professional growth; foster inclusive environments.
* Identify and implement innovative educational approaches (simulation, digital learning, reflective practice).
* Participate in senior leadership duty rotas and manage the Radiotherapy Training Budget for CPD activities.
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential: HCPC registered Therapeutic Radiographer; postgraduate qualification in education, leadership, or healthcare management; evidence of continuing professional development. Desirable: teaching qualification or equivalent; coaching qualification.
Experience: significant post-registration radiotherapy experience including clinical education and training; leadership/management experience; experience in delivering multi-professional education and assessing clinical competency. Desirable: service development, quality improvement, audits; experience with curriculum development and academia.
Skills: strong leadership and strategic planning; excellent communication; ability to design and evaluate induction/education frameworks; ability to provide structured feedback. Desirable: digital learning, project management, presentation, research/audit skills, writing for publication.
Knowledge: in-depth understanding of radiotherapy pathways; QA processes and regulatory standards in clinical education; awareness of current challenges and innovations. Desirable: knowledge of national education frameworks and placement governance; NHS learner contracts.
