Roles Available in Location: Stevenage

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Life Sciences, including but not limited to: Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Pharmacology, Immunology, Genetics, Physiology, Microbiology or Computational Biology, Material Science.

Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK or ROI University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: September 2026

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.

The Roles (15 available)

This advert contains multiple roles. Please read each role carefully before proceeding as you will be asked to provide a preference later in the application process.


Role 1 – Respiratory, Immunology and Inflammation Biology Unit (RIIBU)

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of Department

This is an exciting opportunity to join RIIBU/TU, which oversee preclinical and early clinical assets across several disease areas. The Units consist of multiple disease-aligned groups and this role will be within the Analytics or Translational team.

Key Placement Learnings

* Combining biological knowledge and analytic skills to maximise impact in progressing new medicine opportunities.

* Coding in R.

* Bioinformatic analysis workflows for RNA-sequencing data and possibly single cell and spatial transcriptomics data.

* Developing data-dashboards for lab outputs.

* Training others in analytics and elevating digital fluency.

* Collaboration with Human Genetics and Genomics, AIML, Data and Predictive Sciences, and Research Statistics.


Role 2 – Human Biology and Omics Technologies

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Roles involve advanced cell culture, genome editing, high content imaging, automation, functional assays, flow cytometry, ELISAs and omics.

Key Placement Learnings

* Advanced humanised cellular models with microfluidics (organs-on-a-chip, organoids).

* High-throughput genomic & transcriptomic approaches for targets.

* Genome editing in primary human cells with functional readouts.

* High content imaging and automation processes.

* iPSC-derived models and genome editing pipelines.


Role 3: Discovery Biology, Screening and Chemical Biology

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available)

Overview of the Department

The primary responsibility is to deliver high quality pre-clinical leads using assay development, high throughput screening, etc.

Key Placement Learnings

* Individual projects driving data for program progression.

* Data analysis to determine next steps.

* Screening against safety liabilities and reducing attrition.

* Journal clubs and presenting progression.

* Cross-department awareness days and technologies including fluorescence, luminescence, flow cytometry, cell imaging, Mass Spec.

* Planning and designing experiments; scientific communication.


Role 4 – Genetic and Investigative Toxicology

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Overview of the Department

Safety and drug disposition to support development across stages.

Key Placement Learnings

* Designing experiments to answer safety hypotheses.

* Evaluating genotoxic liabilities per ICH S2 (R1).

* In vitro toxicity assays and data interpretation.

* In vitro cell culture and careful documentation.


Role 5 - Cellular Biomarkers Flow Cytometry

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice

Overview of the Department

Delivery of complex flow cytometry panels for clinical trial sample analysis.

Key Placement Learnings

* Design and validation of flow cytometry panels.

* Work with spectral cytometers; wet lab and analytical skills.

* Plan, execute, interpret, and present results.


Role 6 – Immunoassay - Soluble Biomarkers

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice

Overview of the Department

Identification and implementation of precision medicine strategies and biomarker endpoints.

Key Placement Learnings

* Immunoassay platforms and cross-disease work.

* Developing and validating methods for soluble proteins.

* Pharmacodynamic marker analysis and data processing.

* Reporting of results.


Role 7 – Biopharm Analytical Scientist

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Drug Substance and Product Analysis UK; analytical technology for screening candidate molecules.

Key Placement Learnings

* Automated equipment operation and reporting.

* Project work execution and data interpretation.

* Teamwork across GSK R&D locations.

* Automated workflows to expedite development.


Role 8 – Modality Platform Technologies

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Focus on advanced modalities and protein degradation, including techniques like Western blotting, CRISPR, immunoprecipitation, FRET, BRET.

Key Placement Learnings

* Design and execution in protein degradation and related pharmacology.

* Cross-functional collaboration and target validation.

* Use of state-of-the-art techniques to identify novel targets.

* Record keeping and data presentation.

* Publications drafting and biochemistry/cell biology expansion.


Role 9 – Protein and Cell Sciences

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Reagent production, vectors, and protein/antibody work across discovery.

Key Placement Learnings

* Vector design and production; protein expression in bacterial and mammalian systems.

* Protein purification and analytical characterization.

* High-throughput expression/purification workflows.

* Data analysis and presentation of results.


Role 10 – Large Molecule Research

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

End-to-end biopharmaceutical capability for discovery to clinical manufacturing; antibody molecules.

Key Placement Learnings

* Scientific writing and presentation

* Data analysis experience

* Background in Molecular Biology; Cell Biology; Immunology or Protein Biochemistry


Role 11 – Extracellular-Targeted Cancer Therapeutics

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice

Overview of the Department

Oncology drug discovery focusing on bispecifics and antibody-drug conjugates.

Key Placement Learnings

* Cell culture, viability assays, flow cytometry, ELISAs.

* Experiment design, record keeping, data analysis, presentation.

* Understanding tumour biology and immuno-oncology.

* Project delivery and data presentation.


Role 12 – Biopharm Analytical Automation

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Overview of the Department

Automation and digital platforms to support drug development; automated workflows.

Key Placement Learnings

* Operating automated equipment and scripting.

* Developing automated workflows and multidisciplinary collaboration.

* Training in analytical techniques and data interpretation.

* Producing high-quality results within timelines.


Role 13 – Bioimaging – Non-Clinical Histology

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Spatial biology, histology, and transcriptomics/proteomics data generation for project support.

Key Placement Learnings

* Support for Spatial Multiplexing capabilities

* Spatial transcriptomics and proteomics QC

* Project scoping and planning

* Cross-team relationships

* Sectioning, RNA extraction, staining, image acquisition


Role 14 – Bioimaging – Cellular Imaging and Dynamics

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Bioimaging to study drug distribution and cellular-level interactions; mass spectrometry and microscopy training.

Key Placement Learnings

* Cellular level distribution mapping

* Mass spectrometry and fluorescent imaging data

Role 15 – Oncology Research Unit

Overview of the Department

OTRO focuses on biomarkers, PDOs, and advanced analytics for immuno-oncology.

* Immunology and tumour biology fundamentals
