Junior Data Infrastructure Engineer
Brighton, England, United Kingdom
At Cision, we believe in empowering every individual to make an impact. Your voice is heard, your ideas are valued, and your unique perspective fuels our collective success. We create the conversations of tomorrow and value curiosity, collaboration, and innovation.
Empower your impact at Cision. Be seen, be understood, be you.
As part of the Data Infrastructure team you will support mission‑critical big data platforms to ensure they are fully performant, reliable, available and secure. This role is a blend of tooling development and operational support, requiring attention to detail and a curiosity about how systems work under the hood.
We Manage Four Main Storage Platforms
* Apache Solr (~2.2 PB)
* Apache HBase (~450 TB)
* PostgreSQL (~15 TB)
* Kafka (~60 TB)
All platforms are open source, written in Java, Scala or C, and are maintained via our own builds and patches. We employ open‑source and in‑house tooling (primarily Rust and Python) to manage these services across hundreds of servers in multiple data centres and in the cloud.
Example Projects for Recent Graduates
* Coding mapreduce jobs to validate data between two multi‑TB+ HBase clusters (reducing runtime from months to hours).
* Building a Python stack to transparently migrate production clients between clusters without downtime.
* Testing new HBase builds and deploying them live.
* Creating a platform for rolling out data‑management systems with Apache Airflow to avoid custom job‑management rewrites.
* Deploying a disaster‑recovery solution for Hadoop on AWS while maintaining performance and staying cost‑effective.
Graduate engineers will focus on learning the storage platforms, programming against them, and troubleshooting issues. By 3‑6 months, you will contribute to staging support, and by 12 months you will support production systems. You will also participate fully in the team’s life and design future infrastructure as experience grows.
This role is based in Brighton, UK, but remote work is possible after the initial 6‑12 months of training.
Who We Are Looking For
* An interest in how computer infrastructure works and a passion for learning.
* Experience, ideally production, running storage systems (e.g., self‑hosted service, home lab, or academic projects).
* Linux systems administration experience, including troubleshooting.
* Proficiency in scripting (Bash or Python).
* Experience helping peers.
* Pride in the quality of your work.
* Bonus: Development experience in Python, Java, Rust, C/C++ or Go; upstream open‑source contributions; academic research in scalability, distributed systems, or storage; Kubernetes and Docker experience; CI/CD pipelines.
