We are a well-established, owner-led SME based in the Black Country, providing specialist filtration solutions to a loyal and growing customer base.
With a turnover of approximately £800K and a close-knit team of 8 staff, the business has built a strong reputation for reliability, quality service, and long-standing client relationships.
The company is now looking for a hands-on Managing Director to work alongside the owner and take a more active role in leading the business day-to-day, while driving performance and growth.
Responsibilities
The Opportunity
This is a practical, sleeves-rolled-up Managing Director role with real influence over the day-to-day running of the business.
With a 2–3 day per week commitment, you’ll play a key role in bringing structure, improving performance, and helping the owner focus on the bigger picture.
This is not a corporate environment — we’re looking for someone grounded, straightforward, and comfortable working in a small team where everyone mucks in.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
Take an active role in the day-to-day management of the business
Provide clear leadership to a team of 8 staff
Improve operational efficiency, planning, and delivery
Introduce structure and accountability across the team
Commercial & Growth
Identify and drive opportunities for revenue growth
Review pricing, margins, and cost base
Support customer relationships and business development where needed
Strategy & Planning
Work closely with the owner to set direction and priorities
Implement simple, effective KPIs and performance tracking
Turn plans into practical, achievable actions
Financial Oversight
Maintain a clear handle on cashflow, profitability, and costs
Work with external accountants as required
Ensure commercial decisions are grounded in financial reality
People & Culture
Lead, support, and develop the team
Maintain a positive, hardworking, no-nonsense culture
Address performance issues and build accountability
Qualifications
Candidate Profile
Essential
Previous experience as a Managing Director, General Manager, or similar senior role within an SME
Strong operational and commercial experience
Proven ability to improve performance in smaller businesses
Comfortable being hands-on and visible in the business
Experience managing small teams (5–20 employees)
Desirable
Background in engineering, environmental services, facilities, or similar
Experience in service-led or field-based businesses
Experience working with owner-managed companies
