Job Description
Working hours are Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. Occasional Saturdays may be required. Please note you must be HCPC registered to be considered for this role. As a HCPC registered biomedical scientist you will work as part of the laboratory team carrying out a range of laboratory and scientific tests to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease by the use of sophisticated automated equipment, microscopes and other hi-tech laboratory equipment.
Responsibilities
* Provide a high level of diagnostic service using automated and manual analytical methods in order to provide patients with reliable diagnosis and treatment.
* Perform a range of specialist technical and scientific activities.
* Support the training of other members of staff under the supervision of senior BMS and the operational lead.
* Process specimens received and undertake the related tasks in the various sections of the laboratory, leading to the reporting and interpretation of results in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Aware of clinical risk within the laboratory and support a high-quality clinical service for patients.
* Ensure internal quality controls and appropriate checks are conducted to monitor the daily accuracy of methodologies and instruments before analyser use as well as prior to patient results being released.
* Perform checks on external quality assurance (EQA) submissions to ensure they are on time and review reports.
* Interpret first-line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures (e.g., validation and authorisation of results, ordering follow-up laboratory procedures, adding clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation, informing the requester of clinically significant results).
* Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, and refer on to appropriate specialists for information outside their area of responsibility.
* Maintain the quality assurance procedures of the department, ensuring work towards UKAS ISO15189 standards; measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
* Carry out first-line equipment and method troubleshooting, advise line manager of situations requiring further action and document accordingly raising CAPAs.
* Based on knowledge and experience, designate the range of tests to be performed on various samples on receipt.
* Undertake technical and clinical validation of results from laboratory investigations.
* Undertake method and laboratory instrument evaluation as directed by the Lead BMS.
* Read and acknowledge documents, raise CAPAs, write SOPs and manage document control (logs including IQC, maintenance, dilution, transcriptions, handover).
* Perform audits directed by the Quality team.
* Be responsible for your training record including competencies and maintaining CPD.
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the IBMS.
* UK State Registration (HCPC).
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Experience of working in an accredited laboratory.
* Technically adept.
* Experience in completing validation/verification plans and reports.
* Experience in technical and clinical validation of results.
* Ability to communicate technical information and results with peers and other health professionals.
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations.
* Accuracy in all tasks.
* Motivation and enthusiasm for the role.
* Computer literate.
