An opportunity has arisen for a Temporary Chemistry Technician to join an established HSSE team on a 12-month fixed-term contract. The role will primarily support a major power generation site, with additional support provided to a second generating facility as required. This position plays a critical role in delivering an effective and efficient chemistry service to the business, ensuring full compliance with statutory and internal requirements. The successful candidate will support the safe, reliable and efficient long-term operation of plant through condition monitoring, laboratory analysis, water treatment management and chemical control. Key Responsibilities Day-to-day and long-term management of boiler and cooling water chemistry, including system monitoring, sampling, laboratory analysis, record management, interpretation of results, troubleshooting, and providing recommendations to operations teams Management of water treatment plants (RO, EDI, ion exchange and associated systems), ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operation Management of chemical inventory, including ordering, storage, usage control and disposal Administration and advisory support for COSHH requirements across site Carrying out duties under Safety Rules, including Selected Person (Atmosphere), confined space atmosphere monitoring, and issuing reports Monitoring confined space atmospheres, assigning precautions and confirming safety for work activities Sampling and coordinating internal and external laboratory analysis of fuels, lubricants and transformer oils, including interpretation and technical recommendations Calibration and verification of laboratory, portable and inline analytical equipment Maintaining laboratory standards, reagent preparation, stock control and housekeeping Identifying plant faults, supporting investigations, raising notifications, and contributing to risk assessments and method statements Supervising contractors and acting as Nominated Competent Person for permit issue under Safety Rules Managing gas detection equipment servicing and calibration Ensuring compliance with environmental permits and maintaining accurate reporting records Supporting asbestos management, REACH compliance and legionella management Assisting with chemistry-related projects including boiler water chemistry optimisation, membrane cleaning and preservation, plant modifications and commissioning Supporting maintenance and outage planning activities Assisting with departmental budgeting and contract development for chemistry-related services and equipment Extensive use of SAP for work orders, inventory and procurement processes Skills & Experience Essential: Strong working knowledge of water treatment technologies, particularly RO/DI and demineralised water systems Practical laboratory experience and environmental sampling knowledge Sound understanding of HSE legislation and compliance frameworks Knowledge of chemical management systems, policies and regulatory obligations Desirable: Experience within power generation or the electricity sector Experience in boiler water chemistry and plant operations Familiarity with Permit to Work / Safety Document systems Understanding of plant operations and impact of process changes Project planning or project management exposure Personal Attributes Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills Technically strong with analytical and laboratory capability Collaborative team player with a proactive approach High level of IT literacy (MS Office and SAP preferred) Organised with the ability to plan and deliver tasks or projects effectively Qualifications Essential: Third-level qualification in a relevant science or technical discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering) Recognised Health, Safety and Environmental qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, IEMA)
