Staff Nurse Pre-op Assessment, ALX

We currently have vacancy in the Pre-Operative Assessment Department, as below:

- 22.5 hours per week, at the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.

Countywide working will also be required when necessary to cover leave.

We have a wide range of differentclinics offering a good opportunity to learn and give variety to your workingweek. We are committed to providing flexibility and can offer shift patterns as above, Monday - Friday.


Main duties of the job

Our pre-op assessments are made through an online system calledSynopsis. Our service provides assessment for a wide variety of surgicalprocedures across the County therefore you will be mentored and supported tolearn the role. Ideally you will have pre-operative assessment experience,however a sound knowledge of both medicine and surgery would be keenlyconsidered. It is an exciting time to join the service with many national changes happening and services being reconfigured to forge forward in meeting thehealthcare needs of our local communities. The service offers a range ofdifferent clinics to maximise learning potential and opportunity to gain newskills such as triage, venepuncture and ECG interpretation. You will workclosely with the Nursing and Anaesthetic team and be supported to achieve yourpre-operative competencies.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary

Using your clinical experience and skills, youwill work with your team as a named nurse to maintain accountability forassessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within theframework of team nursing.

Acting with compassion you will put patients atthe centre of all you do.

You will communicate effectively with patientsand their carers regarding their care and educate patients where there is aneed.

You will communicate effectively with theMulti-Disciplinary Team to ensure high quality patient care.

You will show commitment to sustaining anddeveloping your clinical competence and professional awareness.

You will provide supervision, support andeducation to unqualified staff and students.

You will show courage by embracing new ways ofworking and doing the right thing by the people you care for, includingspeaking up when you have concerns.

You will rotate through Pre-op AssessmentCountywide which includes KTC, WRH and the Alex

RoleDetails

You will ensure the provision of accuratePre-operative patient information and documentation via Synopsis Conductingholistic clinical assessments of all patients awaiting surgery, makingappropriate onward referrals in a timely fashion.

You will communicate effectively withpatients, carers and members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team.

Conducting holistic clinical assessments ofall patients awaiting surgery, making appropriate onward referrals in atimely fashion.

You will safeguard vulnerable adults.

You will educate patients and their careers asrequired where a need has been identified, including information on aadopting a healthier lifestyle and provide health promotion to make everycontact count.

Ensuring that all necessary follow up anddischarge preparations are in place prior to admission.

Liaising with Consultants and their teams inthe event of surgical cancellations.

You will be responsible for developing andsustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness inaccordance with PREP requirements and to maintain a professional portfoliowith evidence of reflective practice.

Ensuring that own skills are developed andshared with team as appropriate.

You will contribute to research anddevelopment programmes within the department.

You will contribute to the setting andmonitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintainingstandards.

You will participate in handling complaints inaccordance with Trust policy.

You will participate in preceptorshipprogrammes as appropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor /role model to less experienced staff.

Providing supervision, support and educationto unqualified staff, qualified staff, students and new team members.

You will assist in the training anddevelopment of student nurses and health care assistants and completeassessors training as required.

You will show an awareness of budgeting,exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.

In the absence of a more senior member ofstaff and as part of your development programme, with support, will be ableto undertake clinical / shift management within the department.

You will assist in the assessment of staffingrequirements, report problems to the appropriate manager whilst ensuring safestaffing levels and safe practice for the Pre-Operative Assessment service.

Ensuring effective communication and sharedlearning within your immediate team through utilisation of daily huddles.

Skills and Abilities

* Excellent time management, prioritisation and organisational skills

* Ability to mentor and provide effective support to unregistered and students.

* Ability to work autonomously
* Significant proven knowledge and experience in speciality of medicine and/or surgery
* Ability to take ECGs


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse on sub part 1 of the professional register.
* Experience of working in acute care setting.
* Evidence of continuing education for more experienced Band 5 nurses in speciality .
* NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards within 18 months of commencement of post.
* Ability to undertake Countywide work.
* Significant proven knowledge and experience in Pre-Operative Assessment or valid transferable skills


Experience

* Experience of working in acute care within surgery or medicine.
* Significant proven knowledge and experience in Pre-Operative Assessment or valid transferable skills
