About the Role
We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Engineer working with the structural design team here at Lateral. The Senior Engineer - Production is a cross-disciple role working closely with Lateral’s structural design team and structural engineers, and also interfacing with classification societies, shipyards and production engineers.
The role will utilize your proven experience to provide support and guidance to colleagues across all disciplines. Where necessary, active coordination is required, overseeing a team of structural engineers and structural design engineers to react to design developments and solve problems. It also requires actively managing the quality of work produced by the team, and evolving and developing the standards and processes as necessary.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
· Facilitating communication: Acting as the intermediary to ensure effective communication between parties, such as production, design teams & recognised organisations.
· Coordinating activities: Execution of tasks to align with production schedules and objectives.
· Resolving issues: Investigating and addressing problems that could impact the production timeline or product quality.
· Information management: Gathering, analyzing, and sharing information relevant to production, such as customer requirements, technical specifications, or supplier capabilities.
· Project management: Supporting specific production phases, from initial concept and design through to manufacturing and quality assurance.
· Ensuring compliance: Checking production outputs comply with internal guidelines, customer requirements, and quality standards.
The role is based in our Southampton office, and we offer flexibility and hybrid working arrangements around the core hours and in-office days required for our team.
Key Requirements for the Role:
· Minimum of 6 years relevant experience in the marine industry.
· Knowledge and experience of ship structural design and its application to local structure and foundations
· The ability to produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard.
· Proven ability to process technical problems and effectively seek out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement.
· Excellent communication skills to liaise with colleagues and stakeholders during appropriate design phases to ensure coordination and functionality of design.
· Self-motivation and time management to meet agreed targets and production deadlines.
Desirable skills:
· 2D CAD (AutoCAD) to produce design information (Advanced skill level).
· 3D CAD (Rhino) and other specialist software as required to produce and to review design information.
· MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheet data and presentation information.
· Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets.
· Knowledge and experience of ship systems design and its impact upon integration, preferably with direct shipyard experience.
· Knowledge and experience of ship structural design and its impact upon integration.
· Knowledge and experience of structural analysis.
· Knowledge and understanding of system design theory & an understanding of the design lifecycle.
· Knowledge and active interest in current and new technology and innovation in Naval Architecture and related fields.
