Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced SACT Nurse to progress into a role of a Nurse Practitioner - Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT). This is a senior clinical role within Ward 36 to support, educate and develop staff nurses in the specialty of Oncology/Haematology and SACT administration. The role includes involvement in a nurse-led bone marrow biopsy service and leading education and training for Ward 36 staff. Ward 36 is a fast-paced day unit for patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive therapies, with an additional satellite unit in Cramlington where the nurse in charge rotates. The unit operates 08:00–19:00 seven days a week inclusive of Bank Holidays (excluding Christmas Day). The organisation also supports flexible working arrangements where possible.
Responsibilities
* Lead on education and training within Ward 36, supporting new and existing staff to develop competence in clinical skills and SACT administration through regular direct clinical supervision and hands-on practice.
* Provide teaching and education sessions to the nursing team on a weekly basis.
* Perform bone marrow biopsies in a nurse-led clinic and participate in a nurse-led bone marrow biopsy service, with experience or willingness to train in this skill.
* Teach and liaise with external providers/representatives to develop training for staff.
* Utilise clinical skills to assess patients and apply non-medical authorisation of blood products (or willingness to undertake).
* Demonstrate competencies in IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, and CVC management (including Accredited SACT course).
* Hold or develop credentials such as UKONS SACT Passport, practice supervision/assessor mentorship, teaching qualifications, and evidence of audit/service improvement.
* Exercise leadership qualifications/experience within the role.
* Demonstrate IRMER training or willingness to undertake, and Clinical Skills Course completion or willingness to undertake.
* Competence in bone marrow biopsies (aspirate and trephine) or willingness to undertake further training.
Qualifications and requirements
* Significant experience in Oncology and/or Haematology.
* UKONS SACT Passport.
* Significant experience administering SACT currently.
* Non-Medical Authorisation of blood products or willingness to undertake.
* IRMER trained or willingness to undertake.
* Clinical Skills Course or willingness to undertake.
* Evidence of audit/service improvement.
* Leadership qualification/experience.
* Venepuncture, cannulation and IV drug competency.
* Bone marrow biopsy competence (aspirate and trephine) or willingness to undertake.
Locations & Hours
Ward 36: operational hours 08:00–19:00, 7 days a week including Bank Holidays (excluding Christmas Day). Satellite unit in Cramlington runs clinics on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; the nurse in charge will rotate to this unit when on shift.
