Job Description
The Environment Agency is fully committed to fostering an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively seek diversity, embrace it, and live by it, for the benefit of our staff, communities, and the environment.
We have two permanent roles for Industrial Decarbonisation and Market Mechanisms Advisors within our Industrial Decarbonisation and Market Mechanisms Team in the Environment and Business Directorate (E&B). These roles support the decarbonisation of the economy.
The Advisor responsibilities include:
* Supporting the development of decarbonisation and energy efficiency regimes, focusing on specific regimes
* Contributing to the preparation, review, and publication of technical guidance
* Advising on issues during regime operation, including policy influence and stakeholder engagement
This involves advising government on decarbonisation policies, networking with officials and industry stakeholders, preparing briefings, and producing technical and legally sound advice. A significant part of the work focuses on monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of emissions and energy use, ensuring operators accurately measure and report impacts.
You will work on developing existing and new regulatory regimes, such as expanding UK ETS to maritime sectors and regulating heat networks under upcoming UK Heat Network Zoning Regulations.
The role is varied and reactive, requiring swift responses to deadlines.
The team provides national leadership on UK policies to reduce industrial greenhouse gases, including the UK Emissions Trading Scheme, low carbon industrial clusters, and other related schemes. We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture, leveraging evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to influence policy and legislation.
Experience/Skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and cultures, encouraging consideration of diversity issues
* Experience collaborating with multiple teams with different specialisms and working styles
* Understanding legislation and the principles behind policy development
* Creative thinking and excellent communication skills
* Experience gathering, interpreting, and using data to support persuasive arguments
This role suits a numerate science, engineering, or environmental sciences graduate (or equivalent experience) with an interest in policy implementation. Experience in MRV regulation is desirable but not essential. Training and development opportunities are provided.
