Job Description – Senior Occupational Therapist

Grade 9 (approx. Band 7 equivalent)
Role Purpose
As a Senior Occupational Therapist, you will play a key role in promoting independence, safety, and social inclusion for adults with complex needs. You will assess, plan, and deliver interventions that enable individuals to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible.
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Intervention
* Undertake comprehensive occupational therapy assessments for adults with:
o Physical disabilities
o Sensory impairments
o Learning disabilities
* Develop and implement person‑centred intervention plans
* Evaluate outcomes and adapt support as required
Adaptations & Equipment
* Assess and recommend:
o Aids and equipment to support daily living
o Minor and major home adaptations (e.g. ramps, stairlifts, bathroom adaptations)
* Monitor and review the effectiveness of all provisions
Manual Handling & Risk Management
* Carry out manual handling assessments
* Identify risks and implement safe solutions
* Support safe moving and handling practices for service users and carers
Multi‑Agency Working
* Work collaboratively with:
o NHS professionals (GPs, nurses, therapists)
o Social workers and council teams
o Voluntary and external organisations
* Build strong working relationships within a patch‑based system
Leadership & Supervision
* Support and supervise:
o Junior Occupational Therapists
o Occupational Therapy Assistants
o Students (including fieldwork education)
* Contribute to maintaining high standards of practice across the team
Case Management & Administration
* Manage a complex caseload independently
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date case records
* Ensure all activity is recorded on internal systems
Service Development
* Contribute to the ongoing development of adult OT services
* Participate in team meetings, supervision, and continuous improvement initiatives
Key Outcomes
* Promote independence and reduce reliance on care services
* Enable individuals to remain safely in their own homes
* Support cost‑effective care solutions for the local authority

* Adhere to:

* Ensure all work is carried out in line with professional and ethical standards
Ideal Candidate Profile
* Qualified Occupational Therapist with HCPC registration
* Experience working with adults in a community or social care setting
* Strong knowledge of:
o Adaptations and equipment
o Manual handling
o Promoting independence / reablement
* Experience managing complex cases
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Previous supervision or mentoring experience (desirable)
