About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional General Manager to lead our operations in the Highlands from our Inverness base. This is a fantastic opportunity to build on our well-established local customer base and drive ambitious profitable sustainable growth over the next 5-10 years.
This role is fundamentally about business development and relationship building. You'll be out on the road across the vast Highlands region, making face-to-face connections, visiting sites, and winning new business through your charisma, technical credibility and commercial acumen. You'll be the face of MSS in the region, knocking on doors, introducing yourself to potential clients, and demonstrating the value we can bring to their projects.
As General Manager, you'll have overall responsibility for operations in the Highlands, sitting at the top of the regional structure. You'll lead on how the area office delivers against growth targets while enhancing client relationships at all levels, managing both the commercial and operational aspects of the business.
Key Responsibilities
* Drive business development through proactive client engagement, cold calling and site visits across the Highlands region
* Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients including contractors, consultants, designers and local authorities
* Lead the growth and diversification of business scope, identifying and pursuing new opportunities
* Take overall responsibility for operations across the Highlands region
* Optimise financial performance and operational productivity, accountable for delivery of budgetary targets
* Cultivate external contacts and foster long-term client partnerships
* Manage the business in compliance with company policies, Business Management Systems and all relevant legislation
* Lead, motivate and develop the regional team to deliver excellence
* Champion a culture of professionalism, responsiveness and technical quality
* Travel extensively across the region to meet clients and develop business opportunities
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
Essential Requirements:
* Proven management track record with demonstrable success in driving business growth
* Strong business development skills with a natural ability to build relationships and win new business
* Charismatic and confident personality with excellent interpersonal skills
* Comfortable with extensive travel across a large geographical area
* Technical understanding of materials testing, construction or related sectors
* Excellent organisational skills and commercial acumen
* Natural motivator and team player who leads by example
* Ability to maintain confidentiality, trust and strong business ethics
* Comfortable with proactive cold calling and face-to-face client engagement
* Results-driven with a track record of meeting and exceeding targets
Desirable:
* Established network within the construction or infrastructure sectors in Scotland
* Experience in UKAS accredited testing or technical services
* Knowledge of the Highlands region and local construction market
