Senior Legal Counsel (Engineering & Infrastructure)
East Sussex - Hybrid - 2-3 days per week
We are seeking an experienced Senior Commercial Solicitor to provide high-quality commercial legal support to a major Engineering & Capital Delivery function. This is a unique opportunity to work on complex, high-value infrastructure initiatives that play a critical role in long-term regional sustainability.
🔎 About the Role
You will provide expert commercial legal services across major infrastructure programmes, advising on complex engineering and construction arrangements, capital projects, and strategic commercial transactions.
Working closely with senior legal colleagues and project leadership, you will support both infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, with a primary focus on non-contentious matters and early-stage contentious issues where required.
💼 Key Responsibilities
* Advise on the legal structuring and implications of complex commercial arrangements, capital projects, and strategic transactions
* Draft, negotiate, and finalise a broad range of commercial contracts
* Provide expert advice on public procurement regulations and practical procurement matters
* Act as guardian of procurement-related legal policies and maintain standardised procurement and commercial agreement templates
* Support engineering and construction matters across major infrastructure programmes
* Provide sound legal analysis and risk assessment across diverse commercial initiatives
* Work collaboratively with senior commercial legal colleagues on expansive and technically complex projects
✅ Experience Required
* Qualified lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive)
* Ideally 10+ years’ relevant post-qualification experience
* Strong expertise in commercial contract drafting, interpretation, and legal research
* In-depth knowledge of public procurement law and practice
* Experience advising on complex engineering and construction arrangements
* Sound legal judgement and a strong appreciation of legal risk
* Highly developed commercial awareness
* Excellent academic credentials (2:1 degree or equivalent professional achievement)
* Knowledge of the Direct Procurement for Customers regime is desirable but not essential
