Project
The Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) upgrade framework includes a programme of overhead lines, underground cables and substations to redevelop the transmission network in the north of Scotland between now and 2030. Murphy is responsible for the design and construction of two new 400 kV substations in Spittal and Loch Buidhe and the delivery of 85 km of overhead line (OHL). The project supports SSEN’s broader ASTI Pathway to 2030 programme, aimed at bolstering green energy production, enhancing national network resilience and upgrading the transmission infrastructure.
Graduate Programme
Graduate Civil Engineers will join a two‑year graduate training programme that pairs you with experienced site engineers across multi‑discipline construction projects ranging from large‑scale civils, rail, water, oil & gas to electricity upgrades. The scheme offers both technical and soft‑skills courses to help your professional development and growth as a civil engineer.
Key responsibilities include:
* You will work on site alongside experienced engineers assisting with the setting out, supervision and control of construction activities to be delivered safely to programme, cost, and quality.
* Assisting in progress, design and client meetings and gaining experience across all project disciplines.
* Contributing to the design and implementation of technical solutions.
* Correct use and maintenance of surveying and setting‑out instruments and equipment.
* Assisting with production of method statements, site diaries, inspection and test plans and maintaining as‑built records.
* Conducting inspections in accordance with the Inspection and Test Plan.
* Assisting the engineering team to ensure all materials on site are suitable, stored per manufacturer recommendations and meet contract specifications.
* Maintaining close liaison with the site foreman and works managers.

Location
The position is based in North Scotland (Inverness) with work predominantly across the Highlands/Alness to Wick for the duration of the 2‑year programme.
How We Develop You
Through the 70:20:10 principle: 70 % learning on the job, 20 % learning through others, 10 % structured learning. You will have a business mentor and a Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) to guide you towards ICE membership.
Entry Requirements
* Studying toward an ICE‑accredited Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent.
* Valid UK driving licence.
* Eligible to work in the UK with a valid work permit if applicable; sponsorship is not provided.
Additional Requirements
* Full UK driving licence due to the project location.
* If required, you may need to work away from your home location within the UK during the 2‑year programme.
* Valid legal right to work in the UK.
