About the Role

The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) plays a critical role in safeguarding children by overseeing the management of allegations made against adults who work with children. This includes coordinating with police, social care, employers, and other professionals to ensure that investigations are handled thoroughly, fairly, and promptly. The LADO provides strategic oversight rather than conducting investigations directly, ensuring that all processes are compliant with statutory guidance and best practice. This role is pivotal in promoting safe employment practices and maintaining public confidence in services that work with children.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential Qualifications:

1. A Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work or an equivalent professional qualification.
2. Current registration with Social Work England.

Essential Experience:

3. Substantial post-qualifying experience in social work or a related safeguarding role.
4. Direct experience of fulfilling LADO or Management of Allegations responsibilities.
5. Proven experience in leading service delivery, managing complex cases, and working in multi-agency environments.

Essential Knowledge:

6. In-depth understanding of safeguarding legislation, guidance, and best practices, including safer recruitment and employment standards.
7. Familiarity with the statutory responsibilities of the LADO as outlined in Working Together to Safeguard Children and the Children Act 2004.

Essential Skills and Competencies:

8. Strong analytical and strategic planning skills, with the ability to assess risk and make sound decisions.
9. Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports.
10. Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and respond effectively under pressure.
11. A commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with the ability to embed these principles in service delivery.
12. Confidence in leading change, driving continuous improvement, and influencing senior stakeholders across partner organisations.

- A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.
