Job Description:
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The Norfolk Campus Student Center provides a quality space and program opportunities for students to study, relax, play, exercise, learn and interact with other students, staff and the Hampton Roads Community. The Student Center Assistant will monitor these spaces, facilitate activities, and engage directly with students to create a co-curricular environment that is safe, orderly, inclusive, and inviting for the entire student population. Additionally, the Student Center Assistant is responsible for supporting student leadership development. This position is integral to cultivating positive experiences for guests of the Student Center.
Job Functions:
1. Provide quality service in the various areas of the Student Center, to include the Office of Student Life, Information Desk, event spaces, and the Fitness and Gaming area.
2. Ability to work independently.
3. Report participation highlights and attendance data to supervisors.
4. Perform routine maintenance and clean program and workspaces.
5. Provide input on the development of campus culture and out-of-classroom education enrichment.
6. Report facility and event concerns to appropriate personnel.
7. Provide feedback and input on ways to improve processes and services. Immediate notification to proper professional staff in the event of emergency situations, disturbances, or alarms within the center. Adhere to standard closing procedures, including floor walk-through and equipment shut-down.
8. Review institutional policy and procedures to maintain compliance. Other duties that may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
9. Ability to perform active listening and demonstrate an understanding of student concerns and needs being relational.
10. Demonstrated interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
11. Basic computer skills in operating and troubleshooting Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
12. Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner.
13. Ability to follow instructions.
14. Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
15. Experience with activities and event planning; and with event set-ups (i.e. experience setting up tables, chairs, equipment, etc.).
16. Ability to take initiative, to perform duties independently and as a member of a team. Demonstrated ability to prioritize duties in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Punctuality and the ability to work a flexible schedule to support the various events and hours of operation of the building.
17. Demonstrated ability to enforce and adhere to all relevant policies and procedures set forth by the Norfolk Student Center and Tidewater Community College.
