The Role and the Department The Arrow Programme is a collaboration between Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland. In a nutshell, the Arrow Programme links business with knowledge and research within the university to help foster economic growth in our region. Through the work of a network of Business Development Managers located in the four institutions, the Arrow model aims to provide a catalyst function identifying and linking innovative businesses to Innovation Associates and specialists within academic departments who can help them to undertake collaborative research and innovation activities, supported by funding. Durham University is seeking to recruit an additional Innovation Associate for their Arrow team to work on the new UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) financed Arrow innovation support programme. The Arrow project is part of the larger regional In-TUNE programme, which is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supported by Durham County Council and the North East Combined Authority (NECA). Working in the Durham University Arrow team, the successful candidate will co-ordinate, project manage and deliver a portfolio of collaborations between Durham University, businesses, and external partners. The candidate will have a key role in helping to develop and support North East based businesses to develop and commercialise new products and services, which will help the University to develop a pipeline of projects with regional businesses and contribute to raising the innovation and economic potential of businesses in the region. Innovation Associate's responsibilities on a day-to-day basis include: Acting as the main point of contact for all parties involved (academics, researchers and commercial staff) in an allocated portfolio of short tasked based projects, co-developed around the client's needs. Be an externally facing representative for Durham University at regional networking events and other external engagements. Delivering bespoke collaborative research and innovation support activities for regional businesses, this can include: Designing the project plan, with guidance from the academics and external businesses. Conducting literature reviews. Conducting primary/secondary research. Performing laboratory experiments. Conducting data analysis. Facilitating consultations. Coordinating the collaboration between relevant academics at North-East Universities and external partner representatives. Producing written reports and / or presentations for external businesses. Producing marketing materials from external business engagement activity. Supporting administrative tasks for internal reporting. Candidates will have (or be working towards) a postgraduate degree (ideally Ph.D.) in any of the sectors: Foundation Sciences / Renewable Energy / Data Sciences / non-clinical biosciences. Additionally, previous experience of developing and delivering short-term research and innovation projects related to new product development or emerging technologies would be useful. Experience of working in or with small medium enterprises (SMEs) is preferred, although relevant experience of working with large corporates / multinationals (in relevant sectors) would also be considered. The role involves engaging diverse stakeholders across various organisational functions, strong collaboration and communication skills are highly sought after. Familiarity with technical facilities, analytical services, and contract research environments is also desirable. Lead responsibility for the Arrow Project at Durham University lies with the Research and Innovation Services (RIS) team. The post holder will report to a Senior Manager in Commercialisation and Economic Development Group of RIS, whose remit is to drive spinout creation, licensing activity and major economic development projects and strategic relationships. The RIS Team provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development. The Economic Development team within the RIS directorate works with external organisations and our academic colleagues to facilitate the creation of new research and commercial opportunities and to ensure that Durham University's research is world-changing with local, regional, and global impact and reach. The base location for this role is Boldon House, our exciting new professional services hub. Boldon House is situated on the outskirts of Durham near the Arnison Centre in Pity Me. This could include project scoping, assessing needs, conducting literature reviews, conducting primary/secondary research, facilitating consultations and supporting project team staff to analyse and make sense of the knowledge from various sources to provide meaningful insight directly supporting the aspirations of the SME. Projects typically last between a few days up to circa one month. Act as the main point of contact for all parties involved in an allocated portfolio of projects on a day-to-day basis by continuous communication with client project staff and internal and external collaborators. Responsible for the effective management of project plans; ensuring projects hit decision gateways and other identified milestones. Identifying and resolving any potential issues in meeting these milestones. Organise regular project update meetings, maintaining appropriate communication with all stakeholders. Organise, prepare documentation for, attend and write minutes for meetings of the individual projects. Prepare regular reports and presentations for the Programme Manager. Analyse data on the level of service being provided by the Arrow Programme to recommend areas for future improvement. Meet the development needs of your stakeholders, providing training when required. Manage budgets and expenditure including buying (and returning) goods and services. Communication/Liaison Provide advice and share guidance with your stakeholders to ensure that the University's policies, procedures and regulations are complied with. Use your operational expertise to lead and participate in business meetings, working groups and sub-committees. Coordinate and organise committees and other business meetings and deal with any related complaints. Update policies and procedures in response to any internal or external changes. Use your expertise to provide training or guidance to other stakeholders.
