Role
The role is responsible for making autonomous operational decisions to meet the company's ambitious production growth targets, ensuring daily and weekly operational objectives are consistently achieved to an exceptional standard. Reporting directly to the Senior Management Team, the role is accountable for performance across the core operational metrics of People, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
The business currently manufactures approximately 750 machines per annum and is targeting growth to 2,000 machines per annum over the next four years. To support this expansion, the role leads three Department Heads covering Welding and Fabrication, Assembly, and Finishing, while also overseeing Production Scheduling and Procurement activities. The wider operations team includes fabrication welders, fitters, shot blasting and coatings operatives, and delivery drivers.
A key focus of the position is the identification, procurement, and implementation of modern automated and robotic manufacturing technologies to improve production capacity, operational efficiency, and long-term scalability. The role is critical in maintaining high machine build standards, minimising warranty risk, and supporting the delivery of specialist, patent protected machines to customers across the UK, Europe, and international markets.
Person
The successful candidate will have a background in engineering, operations, or manufacturing management, with experience gained in a supervisory or management role within a manufacturing environment. They will have practical experience of welding and fabrication operations, including managing mechanical fitting, painting, and finishing activities, and will be formally trained in Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement. A degree in engineering, Lean Six Sigma certification, knowledge of ISO 9001, powder coating processes, and IOSH or NEBOSH Health and Safety qualifications are desirable.
They will bring proven experience in manufacturing operations, production planning, and people management, with the ability to lead teams, solve problems effectively, and drive improvements in performance. Experience in recruiting, developing, and managing staff performance is essential, along with a strong understanding of fabrication, metal forming, laser profiling, and finishing processes. The role requires confidence in interpreting technical drawings, working with CAD systems, and managing HR-related processes.
The individual will be a strong and professional leader, capable of building high-performing teams, managing shift-based operations, and improving output against key performance indicators. They will demonstrate a strategic mind set, combined with the ability to see projects through to completion. Good IT capability is required, including proficiency in CAD, ERP, MRP systems, and Microsoft Office, alongside familiarity with modern manufacturing technologies such as automation and robotics. Additional relevant technical or manufacturing experience will be advantageous.
