Overview

Job summary: This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route; sponsorship is only provided where applicants meet UKVI requirements, including relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25,000) and any role-specific criteria. St Richards Hospital Critical Care is a 10-bedded unit with 6 level 3 ICU beds and 4 level 2 HDU beds. The band 6 role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic ICU nurse with the critical care course to take on a leadership role within our friendly, hardworking team. We support ITU course students as well as general students and have a strong focus on education for our critical care team. We receive both medical and surgical patients. We welcome applications from those who currently hold UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct.


Job responsibilities

* Plan, provide and evaluate skilled evidence-based care for critically ill patients, both L2 and L3.
* Support and develop colleagues by mentoring and assessing their skills.
* Promote practice development within Critical Care.
* Shift lead and support staff.
* Fulfil local/trust requirements in specified audit/project work.
* Under guidance of B7 team leader, undertake performance development reviews.

Job description and responsibilities

* Participate in ensuring effective multidisciplinary communication links both upwards and downwards within Critical Care (ICU/HDU) and the rest of the Trust, including all staff, relatives and patients.
* Attend Team Away-days/Unit meetings to communicate and discuss issues with senior staff.
* Adhere to NMC guidelines on documentation; maintain accountability and responsibility for accurate, professional record keeping on paper and/or electronic systems.
* Display competent use of Trust e-mail, CIS message centre, intercom system and telephone.
* Ensure effective shift handovers with relevant detail and address any unprofessional or subjective comments about patients.
* Participate in complex patient case conferences concerning future treatments, including scenarios involving withdrawal of treatment in poor prognosis.
* Support families on a 1:1 basis, explaining complicated medical conditions and providing appropriate information and education to ensure understanding.
* Provide and receive highly complex information on clinical conditions, including breaking difficult news, and manage conflicts with relatives with tact and skill.
* Guide relatives through withdrawal of treatment and, where relevant, tissue/organ donation with the support of Trust personnel.
* Recognise and address poor standards of care among MDT and communicate concerns appropriately and timely.
* Understand the progression of critical illness and communicate information clearly, sensitively and diplomatically to ensure understanding.
* Initiate and participate in complex case conferences and mortality/morbidity meetings; ensure effective communication with the team and under the Team Leader.

Person specification

Qualifications (Essential):

* RGN / 1st Level RN UK NMC registration
* Adult Critical Care Course or equivalent
* Mentorship Course or Equivalent
* ILS Course
* 1st Degree or willingness to undertake
* Advanced Life Support or willingness to undertake

Desirable:

* Experience in other Critical Care Units
* Leadership Course
* Masters level study

Knowledge, Training and Experience (Essential):

* Supervised and assessed management experience or practice
* Evidence of competent clinical and professional practice knowledge
* Involvement and knowledge of relevant research in practice
* Management of invasive airway and ventilation according to clinical condition and ABG results
* Advice and support for care of patients receiving CPAP/NIV/Optiflow
* Assist intra/inter transfer of mechanically ventilated patients
* Tracheostomy care, haemodynamic monitoring, IV drug administration, venipuncture and cannulation
* CPD and knowledge of relevant research in practice
* Critical care knowledge and quick, sound clinical judgement
* Confident and influential in the ward; ability to formulate solutions and decide on best course of action

Desirable:

* Relevant competency records completed
* Research training

Clinical

* Advanced nursing skills - defibrillation, haemodynamic monitoring and haemofiltration
* Venipuncture and cannulation

Communication and relationship skills (Essential):

* Evidence of verbal and written skills
* Excellent interpersonal skills with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team, patients and relatives
* Conflict resolution training
* Counselling course

* Evidence of championing diversity in previous roles
* Evidence of ongoing development to improve understanding of equalities issues
