At DWP Digital, we design and develop digital user-friendly digital services that enable millions of people to access the help, advice, and financial support they need. Almost everyone in the UK relies on our digital services at some point in their lives.

DWP needs the right intelligence for it to be able to deliver its services and continually look to improve them and do this in as efficient way as possible. Management Information is an integral part of providing the intelligence to enable this.

DWP MI provide the strategic capability for MI reporting and visualisations across the entire Department. DWP MI provides an expert domain and IT platform, which supports many teams across DWP in self-developing their own MI and also provides the option for areas of DWP to commission MI to be developed for them.

Our Data Analyst community have a key responsibility in providing the right skills and talent to ensure the effective development of MI across DWP Digital.

* As a Data Analyst, you will be responsible for developing data analysis products which meet stakeholder needs to agreed timescales, as well as coaching others on how to best do this. You will support continuous improvement of standards and provide leadership to develop the broader MI developer community across DWP, providing technical guidance alongside other data analysis functions for stakeholders.
* Working in our MI Support Hub you will have the fantastic opportunity of being able to guide and coach hundreds of teams across DWP, cascading skills and knowledge on how to best develop MI products. This is because many of the teams that engage with DWP MI and build products on our platform are doing so on a best endeavours basis.
* You will be responsible for steering and coaching such teams, with the option to yourself embed in wider DWP teams for a period to help them grow their skills.
* There are also MI developer roles in our teams for scenarios where we are commissioned to develop MI reports on behalf of other DWP teams, such as the Secretary of State SoS dashboard.
* You’ll work as part of an agile development team, and work with stakeholders to develop a product that meets their needs, but at the same time guides them in how to achieve this in the best possible approach.

We’ll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

Alongside your salary of £42,614, Department for Work and Pensions contributes £12,345 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £42,614 to £45,081.

The maximum salary for the grade is £45,081, however a Digital Allowance of up to £5,215 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.


Things you need to know

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of three parts:

* A Personal Details application form.
* Employment history – this should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed in line with the essential criteria below:
* You can understand the appropriate media to communicate findings. You can shape and share communications relevant to the audience. You can give tactical recommendations.
* Identify capability gaps for yourself, team and stakeholders. Take time to coach, mentor and develop other colleagues. Reflect on own work, continuously seek and act on feedback to improve own performance.
* Identify appropriate ways to collect, collate and prepare data. Decide if data is accurate and fit for purpose. Prepare and cleanse data with limited guidance.
* SQL and PowerBI, including data modelling, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), Power Query, and report/dashboard creation.
* Technical statement (up to 250 words). The following statement is aligned to the required technical skill of Data Visualisation.
* Tell us about a time where you have come across a data product or dashboard that was not meeting user needs. Talk us through the issues with it, how you engaged with stakeholders and what improvements you made. Please include reference to which tooling and techniques you used.

The sift panel will use the information in your employment history, personal statement, and technical statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge.

An initial sift will be conducted using the technical statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will be progressed to a full sift.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed above.

You will be asked to do a 10 minutes presentation on the question detailed within the technical statement.
