Job Summary
This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced, high‑calibre pharmacist with advanced, expert clinical knowledge and skills to lead the critical care team at St George's Hospital. The post holder will need to be flexible, organised, aligned with the organisation's values, work well within a team and maintain a positive attitude.
With nearly 8,500 dedicated staff caring for patients round the clock, St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the largest healthcare provider in Southwest London, serving a population of 1.3 million. The trust offers local services, specialist care and world‑class teaching. The critical care units include General Intensive Care, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care and Neurosciences Intensive Care and accept tertiary referrals from within Southwest London and beyond. A new General Intensive Care Unit is under construction and the successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy service in this new facility.
Main Duties
* Work as an advanced expert pharmacist within all areas of the critical care service.
* Lead on the provision and development of the clinical pharmacy services including clinical risk and governance, finance, operations and research.
* Act as a role model providing education, training and mentoring to staff within pharmacy and the specialty.
* Manage and develop a team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and students.
* In conjunction with the principal pharmacist, manage and implement services designed to improve pharmaceutical care to patients and extend the boundaries of clinical practice.
* Progress service improvement initiatives through multi‑disciplinary working to ensure safe and timely provision of medicines.
* Participate in clinical audit and research, risk management and clinical guideline development.
* Deputise for the principal pharmacist and represent the team within the organisation and across the interface.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* B. Pharm / M. Pharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
* Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Diploma in clinical pharmacy practice or equivalent
* Registered independent prescriber or working towards qualification
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Desirable Qualifications
* MSc in a relevant clinical area
* Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
* RPS Core Advanced Pharmacist Credentialing
* Formal leadership and management training
Essential Experience
* Substantial post‑registration hospital pharmacy experience as a clinical pharmacist, including some experience in critical care.
* Experience of directorate work including drug expenditure reporting, formulary management, DTC applications, etc.
* Experience of delivering training and education at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Experience of working within a role involving multidisciplinary communication.
* Experience of identifying and managing risk in a clinical specialty.
* Experience of coordinating and leading audits.
Desirable Experience
* Experience of leading, implementing into practice and/or publishing research.
* Experience of acting as a designated prescribing practitioner and/or clinical supervisor.
* Experience of using an electronic patient and medicines administration system.
* Experience of working in outpatient clinics.
Essential Skills
* Ability to work on own initiative and effectively as part of a team, both within pharmacy and at multidisciplinary level.
* Applies sound professional judgement to clinical, legal and ethical issues.
* Ability to provide highly complex information on pharmacy services issues and impart knowledge to all levels of healthcare professionals.
Desirable Skills
* Ability to think strategically.
Essential Knowledge
* Advanced clinical and professional knowledge, including some knowledge of critical care.
* Knowledge of wider therapeutics and pharmacology.
* Knowledge of NHS issues, priorities, policy, procedures and guidelines, with ability to implement locally.
* Demonstrable awareness of and commitment to clinical governance.
Desirable Knowledge
* Familiarity with CMM computer system.
