An exciting opportunity for an experienced tunnels Project Manager to join our tunnels infrastructure/maintenance team in the Wales region, reporting to the Contracts Manager and leading the delivery of portfolio of varied tunnel maintenance schemes.
Job Purpose:
To lead the planning, design, and delivery of tunnel maintenance projects within the Control Period 7 (CP7) Buildings & Civils (B&C) Framework. The role requires extensive experience in tunnel maintenance within a rail environment, with a strong focus on drilling operations, drainage systems, and structural lining techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Management
* Deliver tunnel maintenance projects in alignment with CP7 objectives, including safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
* Manage project lifecycle from concept through to completion, ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards and procedures.
* Lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.
* Operate within Network Rail's PACE and SPEED delivery models to optimise project timelines and resource utilisation.
Technical Delivery
Oversee and manage:
* Drilling operations in tunnel environments, including geotechnical investigations and structural support installations.
* Drainage maintenance and repairs, ensuring effective water management and long-term asset resilience.
* Spray concrete repairs and structural lining, applying modern techniques for tunnel reinforcement and refurbishment.
* Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with engineering design specifications, health & safety regulations, and environmental standards.
Design & Planning
* Collaborate with design teams to develop engineering solutions tailored to tunnel conditions and operational constraints.
* Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for complex underground works.
* Monitor project progress, budgets, and schedules, reporting regularly to senior management.
Essential Skills & Experience:
* Proven experience in managing tunnel maintenance projects within the UK rail sector.
* In-depth knowledge of tunnel construction, inspection, and repair methodologies.
* Strong understanding of:
* Drilling technologies and techniques in confined underground environments.
* Drainage systems design and maintenance, including water ingress control.
* Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) and other structural reinforcement methods.
* Familiarity with Network Rail standards, asset management systems, and safety protocols.
* Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
Qualifications:
* Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline.
* Chartered status (CEng or equivalent) desirable.
* Project Management certification (e.g., APM, PRINCE2) preferred.
* Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification.
Working Conditions:
* Office-based with regular site visits to tunnel locations across the Wales & Western region.
* May involve night shifts and weekend work depending on project requirements.
* Must be comfortable working in confined spaces and underground environments.
