Administrator – Lung Cancer Screening Programme
Closing date: 02 June 2026.
Position: 1 Permanent post and 1 Fixed Term post (until October 2027).
An exciting opportunity to provide administrative support to the Lung Cancer Screening Programme (LCSP), which provides screening to people aged 55 to 74 who have previously smoked and are at risk of lung cancer across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The programme delivers Lung Health Checks and CT scans to a population of over 60,000 eligible participants.
Working Monday to Friday, based at South Tyneside District Hospital, you will support the programme for a fixed term period of one year. You will work alongside respiratory and radiology clinical teams, contributing to clinical pathway developments and optimising uptake of the screening service across South Tyneside and Sunderland, demonstrating excellent planning and organisational skills and taking into account booking schedules for both Lung Health Checks and CT scans.
Main Duties
* Act as a point of contact for questions or queries from the general public, providing advice and guidance on the screening pathway.
* Support participants with reasonable adjustments, including translation services, transport, flexible appointments and support for those with hearing impairments, learning difficulties or non-first-language English, upholding Health Equality principles.
* Demonstrate empathy and understanding to participants worried about outcomes and results of the screening process and possible treatment options.
* Support the wider clinical team in managing clinical pathways, onward referrals and processing outcomes from weekly MDT meetings.
* Maintain booking schedules, generate appointment reminders, update eligible patient lists and facilitate screening recall.
* Record service‑related outcomes efficiently and accurately, ensuring clinical pathways are followed and validated.
Job Responsibilities
* Contact people identified to take part and provide effective administrative management of the screening pathway.
* Make appointments for face‑to‑face or telephone assessments.
* Ensure clinical pathways are followed, screening outcomes are monitored and audit processes are adhered to.
* Complete tasks including managing screening recalls, clinical bookings and outcomes.
* Liaise with colleagues within the Trust and with external agencies such as GP practices.
* Collate audit data for review of national targets.
Person Specification – Skills & Knowledge
* IT expertise including advanced keyboard skills.
* Organisational skills.
* Ability to work on own initiative.
Qualifications
* Basic numeracy & literacy skills to Level 1 or equivalent.
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in experience.
* GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above).
* Knowledge of medical terminology.
* Data protection and IM&T security.
Experience
* Experience working in a busy office environment.
* Communicating with people at all levels.
* Experience in the NHS or working with patients.
* Experience working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
* Experience using IT systems and software packages.
* Previous NHS experience.
* Previous medical administration experience.
* Use of Occupational Health Record Management Systems.
* Experience managing referrals, waiting lists and coordinating appointments.
Personal Qualities
* Confident in liaising with external agencies such as other screening programmes and GP practices.
Physical Skills
* Ability to sit at a workstation as necessary.
* Mobility to handle boxes of stock (envelopes, paper and leaflets).
* Requirement for speed and accuracy when recording participant pathway activity.
